I would just like to know what your favourite games system is for starship combat?I've been wargaming now for over 30 years,so I've seen a lot of combat systems in that time.My personal favouries in that time have been:-Full Thrust,Aeronef,Star Trek Combat Simulator,BFG,and of course the classic Star Fleet Battles. What are your thoughts on these systems?

Ive played many starship batt;e games - FT, BFG and Leviathan would be my favourite big ship games, and Silent Death and Interceptor for fighter combat.

SFB flashbacks still give me the shudders...

And I would like to politely point out that Aeronef is a simulation of civilised duelling in aeromobiles and dirigables from an enlightened age, not some riff-raff Space game :D

We played Aeronef in a space setting as in the bumf in Full Thrust, 'It was hell Caruthers, six weeks in space without a trouser press' kind of theme. It does work well as an alternative to BFG,with a far better turn mode available to all ship classes. You can use your BFG fleets in this system to good effect.Just change your bomb loadout to torpedoes with a 18cm range,& it works well.

HA!

Nice to see I'm not the only one that suffers from SFB-PTSS Tas...

I'd rather do calculus in my head after three day drinking binge than try and do a turn a turn of SFB.  :80:

I also have to agree with you on the Leviathan/Interceptor score.

Another game we played a fair bit of during the 1990s was Traveller: Brilliant Lances which is slightly more complex than the Full Thrust set of rules but more "futuristic" as well.

Another one that I keep looking at for possible use as a VSF Aethership combat game is Noble Armada by Holistic Design.

It comes with the tag line of Broadsides and Boarding actions and is set in the Fading Suns universe but has relatively generic and simple mechanics.

BFG, but mainly because my experience outside it is quite limited. I've had a dabble in Full Thrust, and though more realistic with vectored movement, I can't help but cling to the lovelyness and hand-waving simplicity of the BFG rules.

Lots of fun.

One I'm quite keen to look into though is B5 A Call to Arms. Looks quite fun and is rather similar, so I heard, to BFG. It has nothing to do with the fact I've in the last two weeks, for the first time, just watched the first four series of Babylon 5 itself..  :(8:

Yes several BFG players I know have switched as they see it as a better varient of the style.

Dont worry Xisor- you are not alone.

In 6 weeks from mid Dec to end of Jan I got through all 5 series, all 5 movies, Legend of the Rangers and Crusade.

I am currently reading the B5 RPG books in order. Am thinking of going to the Mongoose Open Day next Sat to pick up 2nd edition of RPG and box sets of Narn/Minbari warrior figures.

What ACtA fleets are you thinking of doing?

Cheers

James

Hi Guys,

I think I'll put my vote with Full Thrust.

BFG is just too broken and...

Babylon-5: A Sky Full Of Stars is still a work in progress.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Hmm, I must admit to liking anything with ships in really, from Harpoon to BFG

Full Thrust is probably my favourite, although I havent played in about 6 months after growing frustration with the 'fighter/missile balance issues' which plague straighline competitive play. Still good for non-tourney style tho'.

I like a lot about BFG, but there is still stuff which irritates me. Forcing you to use specific basing (for missiles and fighters) is a pain, and just seems clunky and not needed. A lot of other aspects of it are very elegant, but the problem is the miniatures are what interest me, and I am VERY pedantic about basing...

SFB I havent played a lot, but I would echo the opinions of others really. The issue I always had was it isnt really that hard to do a lot of the book keeping, but it can be very boring... Federation Commander (or SFB Light) looks interesting tho', and I do want to give it a go at some point.

For B5 Ive always liked B5 Wars, and have a lot of respect for the things they tried to do with the system. Very cool damage allocation (you can almost FEEL it when your Vorchan gets its whole front section ripped off by heavy fire), which is lots of fun. Not so keen on ACTA, but I do need to play it more to really say for certain, I think Maksim has it about right on this from what Ive seen.

Others I like are GOBS (amusing for using LOTS of ships, but the different dice are complicated), Silent Death (fighter rather than cap ships, but the way you chase each other round the map can be very cool) and Aerotech (Mechs in space, what could be bad :) ).

As you can see from the above, I have negative things to say about a good many systems (Its my favourite aspect of wargaming, so Im picky  ). Because of this, Im actually playing round with my own rules set at the moment. With spaceships its in some ways an easy thing to do, as at its simplest you can just pinch those rules you like from other systems (movement from FT, weapons fire from B5Wars, orders from BFG, etc). Hours of entertainment :D

There's also Starmada, which is lighter in flavor than Full Thrust but very, very flexible and customizable.  Check on my website for a review:

Re: wargame_insomniac

Mainly Vree because I like the idea of them, but then again I think it'd be pretty cool to have a small Drazi contingent or two...

One purple, one green.

:D

As it goes, I'd probably need to simply buy the main boxed set and have a play about with a few of the counters first. I like a few of the fleets, and there's some ships I'm kinda set against[I'm not so keen on the Minbari], but I'd probably settle on anything else if I like how they play. In BFG I'm a fan of the Tau style[a coherent, tight, mutually supporting fleet].

It should be interesting...

Hi Guys,

I'll revise my response a bit.

- I STILL think I'll put my vote with Full Thrust.

- BFG is just too broken and...

- Babylon-5: A Sky Full Of Stars is still a work in progress. I play Vree and Shadow fleets.

- SFB is really clunky.

- Leviathan is an oldie but a goodie. However, it requires a pretty good amount of recordkeeping.

- Traveller: Brilliant Lances is OK, but runs into lots of problems.

- Starmada interests me alot, but I haven't tried it yet.

- Star Frontiers: Knight Hawks was an OK system that ran pretty fast.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.
