Hi,

I've recently started getting back into gaming after a long absence (about 14 years!). And I was thinking about playing Epic again, as I was a Space Marine player long ago. I have a few silly questions; I'm undecided to go down the "official" E:A route or try out NetEpic.

*** I get the impression that not many people liked the changes in 40K Epic but that?s been "fixed" in E:A? ***

*** If I started picking up some cheap (old) miniatures on ebay would I be restricted to using them in only NetEpic? ***

*** Does E:A only support the miniatures you can currently buy from the Games Workshop online store? ***

All advice gratefully received, thanks in advance.

Ben.

You wil be able to use the vast majority of old models in EA.  The only significant exception I can think of is Squats.

You can either use them as "counts as" miniatures or use alternate rules for the models generally referred to as "collectors models" or "appendix models" rules.

A good example is  the IG Chimera.  It came in several varieties and Forgeworld produces several more.  If you want to play an "official" GT game they are all simply Chimeras but if you want to play a friendly game and use them exactly as WYSIWYG you can find stats for all the different weapon loads in the "Collectors Models" section of the rulebook.

To add one small addition to Neal's post. The only other thing that I have seen diferent in EA from other editions is the formation make up may require you to adjust how you see or play some of your old models.

Example, I loved the idea of the IG using Rhinos for their command and the troops on foot. Very "Infantry" of them. This is missing from EA so I would have to leave my Rhinos in the case and use the command as infantry.

But as Neal says, 99.9% of the old minis are usable in the new rules. :D

I'm going to cast my vote for "try out NetEpic", not because I think E:A is a bad game, but rather you're already familiar with the SM2 rules, on which the NetEpic rules are based. NetEpic does a good job of cleaning up and improving the rules for SM2. If you liked the old epic rules, you'll probably like NetEpic even more.

As much as I would love to say go EA, forget netepic for sake of fairness I have to say: Read rules for both, maybe play game or two with both and decide which way to go. That's IMO best way to decide if you are unsure  .

As for models as people have said there's hefty restrictions on some stuff in official tournament lists. That's just tournaments mind you so in unofficial games you can use rest. And in future variant lists might include oddball units as well.

I should also point out that both sets of rules are available for download free, and that (as mentioned) most minis can be used for both systems. Therefore, you dont actually need to decide. You can just buy a few minis, print out the rules and play whatever version you feel like on the day.

Thanks for the info guys.
I think I'll buy some minis and worry about what ruleset later on, the only slight problem that remains is...  finding some players!
I'm in South-East London, UK

There are 20 or so epic players around there at least, if you would like details just ask :) I'm from Abbey Wood, Greenwich Borough (but temporarily in bangladesh).

Wherebouts are you? Also know of 3 1/2 (maybe 5 as friends go to others who I think play Epic) London clubs regularily playing Epic.

Ask any questions here, or pm/email me!

Looking at the blog don't worry the whole coming back thing is strange but familar. Perhaps it just now having the cash to get the things you wanted when you were young? :)

Entirely randomly how is mambo doing? I had to do a site from stratch for a random contract (I got it being the one witht he best command of written english, no IT skills) a year back, just wondered how it was developing.

This is a major issue that you must solve as quickly as you can.

Serious though, I agree that once you locate some other players the issue of rules set may become a moot point. Some groups have already selected a rules set and are runing campains etc. You may find it is easy to just slip into the group.

Either way, have a good time!

The impression I get is that it's a lot easier to find players in the UK than it is in the US.  Probably because GW had a much smaller footprint in the US when Epic was big (right?).

I prefer netepic because I love SM2 and... well!!! I draw the artwork for Netepic gold core rules so I must to do some promo about it!

but I'm not furius with you if your choice is e:A the two systems are good systems    (but netepic have the coolest artist!)

I do not know if this is true, but it feels right to me. I think this would also be true for the other non-core games as well.

Even when GW did get a presents here in the US, it seemed like they did not really try to push anything other then WH and WH40k.

Hi!

Welcome to the forums.

Version of choice is a very personal decision and will depend on your tastes.

As mentioned try both and decide.

Since I'm the netepic coordinator guy, as expected, I'll pimp for netepic.... :;):

From a model point of view netepic has full INDIVIDUAL stats for every model ever made, including the new ones. No "counts as" with netepic. If you got it, we have their own rules for them. All armies, including squats are available and a few more home brew besides.

Also, netepic gold is in production, so you'll have anice colorful rulebook to boot. :)

That's why I'm trying to build three or four armies, thanks to eBay.  I figure if I have several armies all painted, based, and ready to play, all my friends have to do is show up.  With food, of course.
