I suspect that the working business models generally involve online sales.

Your a very brave man.  Down by us (Southampton) we've had numerous games stores open and close over the last few years.  Some of them have done really well till the novelty wore off then about 18mts down the line folded with large debts.

The best bet is to ensure that there isn't a GW anywhere near you as they tend to bring in all the custom..  Warmonger, Void, Conflix etc (the independents) just don't sell well enough and unless you have GW stock most of the time you won't make the turn over.

If you do go for it you have to expect long hours, evening and weekend tournies and lots of baby sitting..

Good luck either way..

There is a small GW and a terrible little gaming centre about 30 minutes bus drive away from the town centre.
The idea actually came to me because we have to drive about an hour to get to nottingham. the only way to be guaranteed a gaming table really. the gaming centre near us has only got 3 tables,, and the GW only 1 small table, but epic isn't alowed to be played instore. what i want is a smallish shop, also selling 2nd hand models, a small seating area where drinks and snack are readily available. and plenty of gaming tables so you can be guaranteed a game.

Honestly, you would probably be better off starting up a club and having a weekly games night by renting space in a church hall or community centre. If you find that hundreds of people join up to your club and there just isn't sufficient space to accommodate them, then you might consider risking your shirt on a dedicated space.

Yes, club first, start some sales, then online/store etc. Look for a slow ramping up than a big bang.

And avoid cliches hanging around!

Q: How do you make a small fortune in the game industry?
A: Start with a large one

While I'm not sure how similar the UK market is to the Canadian one a good rule of thumb is there's probably about 1 gamer per thousand people in a given area...

Aside from endemic mismanagement by store owners not having a large enough customer base is probably the second most common reason for a store to go out of business.

I'll throw my support behind the start a club idea. That'll give you a decent idea how large a group there is in the area and how much demand in general there might be.

If you do decide it's worth looking into further try and find out how large a demand there is for non-GW games as well as you can be sure that carrying just one line won't pay the bills.

As well, I don't know if Esvidium Games LTD is still in business either but try asking for a copy of the terms of sale from a UK distributor just to get a feel of what else you can carry and what it'll cost you.

Frankly overall I'd say game stores are a worse investment idea than a new restaurant but if you do your homework and have realistic expectations of running it as a real business and not an extension of your hobby you might be able to make a go of it. Might being the operative term.

My suggestion is to diversify, when I had my business I didn't really realise early enough that selling certain things like juggling equipment, Traditional games, jigsaws can give you quite a bit of a boost.

There were mixed rumours why the GW Sheffield Gaming Centre closed down as it seemed successful.

Like everybody else I would advise caution. Start small and build up.
