There's a new auction on eBay for 5 Forge World Epic-scale component marines.

I'm going to make a big move on them, but don't really need 5 (ahem). After I win (if I win?), I'll dispense of 3 or 4 in some way.

Anybody want dibs? The price will be proportional to what the final auction price is.

I know what you mean. Like, where would you put the wastegates?
You have to wonder if they pressure-cast them. Wouldn't it be great to have all the professional gear?

By my eye, there are no gates at all on the Epic marines.

The large block of resin they're attached to has a smooth top, unlike any other piece of Forgeworld resin that I've seen.

Credit card, to the rescue!

My suspicion is that they either spin cast or vacuum inject the resin.

I'm going to use a slender wire to poke out the air bubbles from the mold.

Chortles and rubs hands together. Mwooo hoo hoo ha ha!

i was thinking the slender wire would be the  best bet, i was also thinking the mold could be made so the entire face of the sprue was open to the air to facilitate this. i figured you could just but it up to the wall of the mold box, opinions oh masters of the resin ?

I know a fellow who does this sort of stuff for a living.  Many secrets, not least of which is the RTV used for the mold.  He uses this super high tech stuff that seems to positively reject air....he can just do a normal vertical cast in a single piece mold and get 1mm thick gun barrels to fill with no waste gates.....it is amazing.

For me, an escape channel for any potential air pockets, one at the lowest point of the model, and a fine dusting of talcum powder seem to do wonders.

I do have some industrial talc, but haven't been using it. It seems to help, does it?

yeah, I've been doing some Eldar Knights and there is a marked improvement in how well the mold fills if I use a fine dusting of talc.  I do like your part pre-fill idea...have to try that on the weekend....still cant get the face of the Towering Destroyer to fill completely.  

The resin I'm using has a 90sec pot life which is giving me the irrits though.

It does have some minor advantages.  One technique I use is to make a one piece smash mold in a small cylinder, with a hole near the bottom part of the mold.  I mount the mold back into the cyclinder for casting, leaving the hole clear.  Start the resin pour and when it starts coming out the bottom hole push the mold fully into the cylinder to halt the flow until resin sets.

Two part molds you can just build a skeleton frame around 3 sides too so you can squeeze out a lot of bubbles....but yeah, it is a bit crazy.  My supply will run out soon and I can get something a little less frantic to use.

It does have a demold time of 10 minutes so you can get a few pours in during a session :)
