Hi all,

I am looking for some advice.

My father has built me a modular gaming table, and, now that he has finished it, he was wondering if there was a market for them.

I will describe the table (once I get my camera set up I will post pictures)

The table surface is 4'8" by 4'8", but, it has a piano hinge down the centre of the table so that the surface colapses into a 2'4"x 4"8" surface for storage.
The extra 4 inches all around the table top is a ledge for rolling dice/holding miniatures.
The gaming area is designed to hold nine (9) 16"x16" tiles (for a 3x3 layout) 3/4" of a inch above the table surface.  This allows for rivers and trenches below the gaming surface while maintaining a modular feel.
Below the gaming surface are holes allowing a person to put their hand under a tile and push it out of the way for placement.  This allows for a tight fit against the edges and no fear of the tiles shifting during game play, but it makes it easy to remove/change the tiles.

The table top rests upon two cupboards, 4' long, 18" deep, 26" high.  The cupboards are identical, and are designed to hold tiles and miniatures in safe storage.
The cupboards have adjustable height shelves to handle weird height tiles and the tiles just slide in.  If you space the tiles out by 1 every 4 inches, the cupboards can hold 18 tiles each, but I am currently getting 36 tiles to fit into each.  The miniature storage area is 12" wide by 161/2"s deep by 24 inches high with adjustable shelves - I will leave it to you to consider how many mini's will fit into that space, and both cupboards have just such a space.

The cupboards are on furniture casters and have doors with locks (I have young children so this was a must).

The whole table was designed to be rolled around the middle of the gaming room, but, be able to be disassembled, and pushed against a wall.

The unit is made out of mahogany and pine.  I just stained mine, since I like the look of finished wood, but it can be easily painted.

My wife likes it because it looks like a nice piece of furniture and when I am not gaming, it folds up and pushes against the wall and looks like a hutch. (only coming 18" away from the wall)

My father is building a second one for me since the unit was designed to allow multiple units to join together with joining tiles that latch into the ledge on the table.  Two tables joined like this give a playing surface of 9'4" x 4" and supports 21 modular tiles.

So, the question is, does a gaming table like this interest anyone?
The next question is, what is a fair price for such a table?

If there is interest, let me know.
If you have questions, let me know.

And Finally, if people are looking to trade for tables like this, I think I can come to an understanding with my father.

best regards

Dalton

Sounds fantastic, pictures please. :)

As for a fair price; you need to think about a couple of points:

1).What is the material cost? - mahogany isn't exactly cheap! :;): ...and component cost (castors, fittings, locks etc).
2).Also, what sort of hours did your dad put in to finish this; unique/small batch production makes for high cost usually, unless he is interested in making them as more of a hobby. :)

[/Design tech student mode off.]

I'm sure you could find people interested in something like this; personally, I would prefer to make one myself, as I know I could do it, and it would be a fun project! - but lots of people like to buy complete, finished items and dislike DIY!

Do some more market research, see if you can drum up some interest (try posting this on some other forums or Yahoo! lists) - you could maybe make a little questionnaire for people to do!

Really want to see pictures, sounds great! :D

Cheers, ~G

Why not advertise one on e-bay along with construction time - and see if you get any interest?

Hi guys, great feedback.

Mahogany is not as expensive as it sounds, and material costs arn't that bad.

I will try to post pictures in the next week or so.  What I need is some web space to post it in.

What I need is some numbers back on what people are willing to spend for somthing like this.  The ones he built for me, I am going to keep, but, if I can get some numbers for what somthing like this is worth to people, then a decision can be made as to wether it is worth while to even entertain the idea of production.

Let me throw out a number, $1000 US.
Does this sound out of the question or cheap?

best regards

Dalton

My brother owns a tropical and marine fish shop, and sells cabinets with cupboards etc for about $500 US.  I'd imagine $1000 US for the sort of item you are describing is a very reasonable price.

Maybe a market for something like this, but relatively lot of money for some people.  Depending on the manufacturing time, you could possibly start by stating that they are made  to order and give the estimated ship date from order date.

:)

Yes, imo your average wargamer would be unable to afford this; however....

As a quality item, finished beautifully and built to order, I daresay you could find a great little niche market for this type of product; go for it, do some more research though!

Hi Dalton,

I would easily say a couple hundred dollars to a thousand for a quality product, but with a price that high, it would be a very limited niche product. Shipping would also be deadly.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.
