Hey, anyone got any good tips on making planets/ asteroids for BFG?
I have a few tips: I use polystyrene balls for planets (a 6" ball makes a good small world) skimmed with a layer of milliput. While the putty's still wet, I use a piece of rock (like pumice or tuff with little holes in) with a good texture to imprint the putty with. I also tend to use a compass (drawing) to add bigger craters, lava floes and other surface features.
For asteroids, the best thing I've found yet is pieces of pumice or tuff (as above). It tends to be full of holes which look like craters anyway, so all each 'asteroid' needs is a flying base. If you live anywhere with old volcanoes nearby like I do, you can collect the stuff for free. Otherwise, pet shops sell bags of it for fish tanks and aquariums.
Anyone got any other ideas?

I have to get myself some of that foam stuff, what's it called? I've seen pretty effective looking Tau/ Eldar buildings made out of the stuff for 40k, looks like its good for planets too. Where can you buy it?

My first BFG terrain.  Only spent a few minutes and the gas giant looks more like a cheese ball, but hey!

Hi;

Another option, (though more toxic) is to rough carve your foam asteroids, then hit them with some spraypaint.  The paint will eat away at the foam creating a pocked, cratered surface.  Don't use too much spray, as it can eat away all the foam, and definitely do this outside!

Once the surface is dry, prime with a brush, paint to taste, and mount as desired.  I made 30+ in an evening and a half (spread over two days for drying time...) and they look pretty good.  I will try yo get some pictures...
