Ok, a design for asteroids, like it says on the tin!
DISCLAIMER: ?These asteroids are meant to be of "gaming quality", and are not super-detailed or really realistic. ?However, they'll be fine for home terrain. (Not good for clubs, they may well be too fragile )
YOU WILL NEED: A sharp craft knife. 1 or more Normal sponge/s more than 1" thick (preferably about 2"). Lots of cocktail sticks.* Some balsawood/foamcore/stuff for bases* Some PVA glue Some Paint *If you're feeling rich then you can just get some small citadel flying bases. ?These would make it sturdier (and more suitable for gaming clubs), but suddenly you ain't getting 10 or more asteroids for under ?2...
TECHNIQUE:(1) ?Cut some pieces of sponge from your (hopefully clean) sponge. ?Cut and tear them into asteroidy shapes (like potatoes, duh). ?Carve out some craters if you want. (2) ?Cut a decent sized square of balsawood/foamcore to use as the base. Foamcore is my material of choice, BTW, as it cuts MUCH easier. ?Gouge out a hole of about cocktail stick diameter in the centre of the base. (3) Take a cocktail stick and cut one end off, about 1/4 of the way up. (4) ?Grab your PVA and put a small blob on the sponge asteroid were you want the cocktail stick (which your using as a rod to give your asteroid height) to enter the asteroid. ?Poke the pointy end of the cut-down stick in so you have a secure fit, but with very little cocktail stick coming out the top. (5) ?Give this a few moments to stick (making sure the cocktail stick is straight) and then put a small amount of PVA into the hole in the base. ?Push the blunt end of the cocktail stick into this hole. (6) ?If you're using foamcore for the base, add PVA on all foam areas, so it doesn't dissolve when spray-painted and leave to dry, making sure it doesn't fall over.
Tomorrow I'm moving on to painting ?
Any criticisms, questions?

Not a bad idea. If you want to write this up with pictures, I would love to host this article on my site! Good stuff.

Thanks CyberShadow! ?The painting section is on its way about... now. ?Getting pictures may be tricky, as I don't have a scanner and our digital camera doesn't work. (starts to think)
(7) ?Now spray paint the asteroids black, but remember to use blu-tac or similiar to hold them down onto whatever they are sat on (insert safety tips for spray painting here). ?Leave to dry for 2 or so hours, then look for the bits you missed with the paint. ?Respray until they are entirely black, then leave to dry. ?Synthetic sponge does not melt under spray, so don't worry! (8) Once all that spray paint has dried, grab some grey acrylic (it doesn't have to be Citadel, anything of a dark grey hue will do.) Put the paint on to the sponge asteroid fairly thickly, and if you need to water it, only add a LITTLE water, so that it dries in a reasonably sane length of time, and if its too wet all the paint runs to the bottom half of the sponge. Leave the grey to dry with the sponge UPSIDE DOWN (so the paint runs to the top of the sponge, where you see it) (9) Touch up the base and cocktail stick with black where grey has got on it (and it will have!) (10) if you want, add some stars to the base.
And you're done! (not very Kwik asteroids, really)

Quote (MaksimSmelchak @ 24 2004 Oct.,09:14) | I've found that bark with some filler connecting the pieces also looks very effective...
Cool asteroids...
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak. | How does the bark take to the paint?

Bark takes fine to paint once you prime it.
I was going to build a Rok and Hulk Ork BFG fleet before I realized that they are near worthless in BFG... too easy to hit.
I settled for a standard Ork and Imperial fleet.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

I wonder if you could use it to build some drop rocks for your Epic Orks?
I mean, if it looks good as an asteroid..... ? ?
