OK, I have enough of the normal items, hills, rocks, buildings (two sets of the Epic buildings and about 10 others). Trees and such greenery. Now what? What would you build next? Some limits: a) I am not Rich ![]() b) I do not have room for "fixed" tables so my stuff has to be storeable. c) I am not a master painter or builder, just an average one ![]() dafrca |

Depending on the types of games you want to play, I would say emplacements, trenches and objectives would be a good bet. Power facilities, storage units, rearmming stations, fuel dumps, reapair stations, factories. All would make decent scenery and objectives. Plus, they should be fairly simple to build. Walls are always good. Mines too. Hell, I could go on and on. I hope this helps a little. ![]() |

Check the E40K rule books, they have great random terrain generators for all types of planets ... very cool ... ![]() ![]() |

How about roads, rivers and bridges? Even these simple itmes can make a big difference to your games. Rubber can easily be used for cheap, storabe and durable amterials to base them on |

Yep, I'm also moving onto making some roads now, I'm going to be making them in lots of seperate sections, with irregular curves and intersections.. might even finish them all sometime.... ![]() |

I do my terrain by planet type or regional location: ? - Desert or Jungle - Death World(s), - Futuristic Humanoid Urban (including Industrial, like in Necromunda), - Daemon World (grave yards, monoliths, dead trees, etc.) - Orkoid villages (the Warmaster Ork Village is great, plus I made one out of wooden blocks from a child's toy set) ? And I'm working on a 'Nid/Bug planet using: Kryomek/Grendal/GZG terrain bitz (Spores, Alien Eggs, Giant Mushrooms (!), etc. ![]() Plus I just got more Ruins for my Desert & Jungle worlds and a few Necron-type (?) pieces, too. I like to do terrain bitz, White Dwarf and as I said the E40K rules are full of good ideas! |

If I had the room to do so it might be fun to try and make one world type at a time. I think I will try and stick to generic for now as I have limited time, money, and storage space ![]() dafrca |

If you're thinking of making some 'Nid terrain, Shells can make brilliant spore chimneys and other naturan and yet biological looking forms when painted up and worked into scenery. I did some 40K terrain for my local club's campaign final showdown game which was set on a Nid infested red planet (think Mars gone bad...) & it worked great. Big conical shells for spore chimneys, conch (sp?) type thinks which we worked into hillsides to look like underground mother-bugs etc. I think one of the guys still has the board somewhere - I'll get some pics if I can. |

Love to see some pics, T/S. I really must get some taken of my stuff ! And I went to the Pet Shop today, in the most recent W/D they show using fish tank plants for terrain. I've done this before, and they look great. Not to mention there are some neat castles, ruins, etc. that are available in both 40k & Epic scale for the fish to swim around. They would look good on a terrain board, too ... ![]() |

That reminded me of another tip. Old fake Christmas Trees. You can get ones that had sections of plastic needles on a thin "Branch" that are between 2-6 inches long. They have sockets so they just pop into the "Branches" of the tree when you put it together. For our purposes of course, dont attach them to the branches & every one of the hundreds makes a tree. I picked one up at a Jumble sale we were running for a local charity a few years back & got enough jungle trees out of it to fill (and I mean pretty much FILL - they used it to play a Warhammer Quest variation where the forrest was too thick to get though making it a corridoor / room fighting game) a 4 x 4 board & still have heaps to spare. They're not the best trees in the world, but its very cost effective, and I wouldnt mind betting it would be cheaper than buying model trees even if you bought one new! Sorry to say the board was destroyed a couple of years back but I still have some spare Needle sections if anyone wants to see what I'm talking about. |

Objective ideas: Stair of Tears: I forget which company made this for 40K, but it was basically a stack of off-center slabs of stone leading to the top stone with "horns" similar to the top of Orthanc in the LotR movies. I made an epic scale with thin sheets of styrofoam, picture matting, and texture gel. Warp Gate: I cobbled a warp gate out of the old vibrocannons, which everyone had tons of. It takes 4. Take the guns off all of them, leaving the platforms and supports. Cut the supports off two of them and glue them to the tops of the still-attached supports so they make an arc. Glue the platforms to a base nose-to-nose (or space how you want) so they form a gate. Easy Bunker: The top level of the Megagargant is the perfect size and has bunker-like doorways built in. Just glue it down and patch the hole in the roof with some other bit. Or stick a gun in it and make it a gun emplacement. Stone Maze: Lay down a sheet of styrofoam and draw the maze pattern on it. Cut it out and glue the pieces to a base. Works for everything from a couple inches square and waist high to infantry to something big enough to drive tanks through. Now that I think about it, you could probably give it more texture and make it a hedge maze, too. Shrines. All kinds of stuff will work. I used pieces out of an old alarm clock to make an Adeptus Mechanicus shrine to the machine-god. Obelisks are easy from a wide range of materials and you can add appropriate racial details. Head dresses and banner bitz from 40K scale can look good, too. Fuel Dump: Use all sorts of bits for fuel tanks - ping-pong balls, pill bottles, etc.. Use wire to make pipes. Cut a dowel to length for drums. Hopefully, that will give you some food for thought. ====== I was looking at a sprue the other day, and I thought it would make a good defensive line. Cut the right shapes, glue it down, brush with texture gel and paint it like stone. The round projections could even be made into hvy weapon positions if you wanted. |

Sprues are particularly useful for ruins. Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak. |

...especially if they are sprues of ruins... ![]() Seriously, for $3.50 per sprue, I doubt anyone is going to build better ruins than the GW stock for an equivalent price. |

This may seem odd, but... The best bitz I've ever found for making ruins have come off the student's playground! They chew up things until all they could be is ruins. I find little backpack attachment bits all gorund up into little rubblr bitz, pens that look like fission weapons hit them, and a whole variety of other good things for rubble. Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak. |
