Post subject:  TOFG 1: A Gamer's Tale

Like so many of my projects, I am sure that this started off as a good idea. Reading through issue 300 of the UK White Dwarf and I come across another incarnation of the Tale of Four Gamers article. And, the thought jumps into my head, ?why don?t we do that?? I am hoping that 2005 brings some serious painting so that I am able to get a force together for a game, but I had the same wish last year and only got so far. This would help. The only questions was, what game to collect for. But then, why do we have to choose? All I need to do was get together a group of like-minded, dedicated gamers and make an article out of it. So, I threw together some details.

The rules are simple. Each month, each participant is allowed to spend ?25 of their own money. They must spend this on the two forces that they have decided to collect ? one for Epic Armageddon and one for Battlefleet Gothic. Then, during the same month, they should paint the newly acquired miniatures, before repeating the process again next month. This continues for four months. At the end of this time, each person should have a force for both Epic Armageddon and Battlefleet Gothic which weigh in at a total of ?100. With the rule books available for free online, this experiment should show just how easy it is to get into both of these games, and have enough to get started with them. Each person can spend the monthly funds however they like, and the only stipulation is that at the end of the four months they must have an Epic force of at least 1000 points and three objectives, and a Battlefleet Gothic fleet of at least 750 points including no more than a single character. There are other regulations in the fine print, such as the fact that the two forces don?t have to compliment each other between the two games, it is possible to take a complete month off (we all have real lives as well, apparently), minis can be taken from a participants personal store as long as the monthly total is reduced just as if they had been bought, postage costs are not included and miniatures can be obtained from pretty much anywhere and can be from other manufacturer.

When I had sat down and worked out the rules of the game, and managed to find an excellent selection of participants, I needed to think about how I would be doing this. For most people, painting up ?25 of minis in a month is not such a tough deal, but in the last three months I have managed to assemble and undercoat a total of one Epic Marine dreadnought, so this was a serious challenge for me. In addition, there is a good chance that I will be away during April, so I may need to take this month as a break.

In the end, I selected Orks for my Epic Armageddon force, and Imperial Marines for my Battlefleet Gothic fleet. I played around with a couple of force lists to see how much I would need to spend in order to achieve the minimum points levels. This was depressing. In the end, I put together a force for each game using the absolute minimum points levels and minimum cost, and I decided not to plan anything beyond that. I would get and paint the minimum as quickly as I possibly could, and then use the last month or so to add the extra bits.

CyberShadow ? The Evil Mastermind

First, a quick introduction. I am Iain, and I run this site. I started it so that I could continue to be involved in the hobby without having to actually paint or play the games! I have been collecting and playing for longer than I really should, and have been involved in the hobby since the golden days of Space Marine first edition, Space Hulk first edition and Rogue Trader Warhammer 40K. My main interests in Games Workshop games centre around Battlefleet Gothic and Epic in its various incarnations, and I collect Chaos, Eldar pirate and Tyranid Vanguard fleets as well as most 40K forces in 6mm. I am also possibly the worlds slowest painter, which wouldn?t be so bad if the results were any good. Unfortunately, they are not. So, with time against me for this, the results should certainly be interesting.

I have decided to use this project as an opportunity to make a start on two brand new forces for me, rather than expanding existing ones.

Epic Armageddon Orks

Orks are probably not the most obvious choice for me. But, they are pretty much the only force that I have not already got half an army waiting to be painted, having started most of the others. I picked the greenskins for a couple of reasons. They should be fun to paint and convert with, and they suit a nice simple colour scheme which does not need all the fine details and neat paint work. But, they are a horde army, so there will be quite a few of them. This makes it difficult to make 1000 points, and in order to reach that target I discovered that the trick is the infantry. For ?12 you get a lot of Boyz, potentially using up a chunk of points. However, once you go beyond this, it gets more difficult. Because the force is so flexible, buying it is less than economical. For example, if I want a Stompa mob then I have to buy three Stompas and a Super Stompa for ?20, whether I want one or not. And that is without mentioning the dubious wisdom of buying four stands of Stormboyz when a mob is six stands. So, my initial force will be based on infantry, which is fine with me, and I will expand once this is complete.

Most of my Epic armies are pretty much planned out. One day, I will get around to putting together two Ork forces. I hope to compile a Blood Axe force, full of dour greenskins in greys and tiger stripes and with captured and converted vehicles, but this will wait for a dedicated army list. For this event, I will make a start on the other planned Ork force, the Spanna Spidaz. This is my own clan, in bright yellow and purple colours and with lots of Orky equipment. They are a splinter clan from the Bad Moonz, formed after a Mek was saved from a Tau sniper shot by a large spanner. He was struck by a vision of Meks being destined for greatness and formed his own clan of like-minded Boyz, Meks and Painboyz. Meks replace the usual role of Nobs (in miniature only, no special rules at this stage) but the force uses the standard Ork list in the Epic rule book.

Battlefleet Gothic Imperial Marines

My choice of fleet for Battlefleet Gothic was a bit more difficult. I wanted to start a new fleet, and one which I would be able to put together and which could remain as a smaller fleet to be expanded later if I felt that I wanted to. I thought about continuing with my Tyranids, but since I am building a Vanguard fleet full of converted and scratch built escorts only this would be expensive and difficult given the time limit. I narrowed it down then to either Necrons, Tau or Imperial Marines. I don?t like the Games Workshop Tau so much and prefer the Forge World vessels, which are more expensive, and the Necrons don?t appeal to me so much. This left the Marines. So, that is what I will be going with for the next few months.

I will be painting them to fit with my half-started Epic Marines, the Dark Talons, in a dark blue. Having selected Marines, I then need to decide whether to use the fleet list in Armada, the Armageddon fleet list in Gothic Magazine number 14, or one of the variants in Fanatic issue number six. Right now, I am still not sure but whatever list I select the fleet will be built around a solid core of Strike Cruisers and Gladius Escort vessels. I will let you know decision later, as soon as know.

Well that, was a much longer introduction than I had planned. So, before the beginning of this event, there are a number of things that I need to do:

Collect an inventory of the various paints, flock, glue and brushes that I have and will need. There is nothing worse that being forced to do nothing for a week because you are missing that vital paint.

Browse the various Battlefleet Gothic Imperial Marine fleets and work out which one my Marines will be following.

Check which minis I will be needing for the first month of this, which I will need to order and which I can unearth from my mini cellar.

Restrain myself from starting this before the first of the month (no cheating guys! :D ). And also, trying to make sure that my enthusiasm lasts until then!

So, I will get back to you in a few days, hopefully with a few answers and the initial purchases.

Post subject:  TOFG 1: A Gamer's Tale

Just a bit of an update. I have spent the last week sorting out the few bits before this starts proper.

I have gone through a lot of my archived Epic and Gothic store. I have very little in the way of Gothic Marines, and so I will need to buy most of the vessels for this, bit a few bits for the orks - although I would like to make sure that these guys stay reasonably up to date as I think that it makes the whole event more relevant. I have a few more bits for conversions.

The biggest problem that I currently have is actually about the paints. I have certainly had enough with GW paints and I am currently moving over to Vallejo colours. This means that I am having to carefully plan ahead for all of the painting, work out which colours I will need, try to identify them using the names alone (since I cant find them in the shops I will need to guess and approximate and hope that what I get will be the right shades), and then order them in a few days and hope that they arrive before I actually need them! This has the potential to go really badly wrong.

I have also checked out the Gothic Marines article in Fanatic Mag 6, and to be honest I am a bit disappointed by it. Since I dont really want to add lots of non-Marine vessels, or a Monastry, all of the lists are pretty much the same. In a way, this is not so bad, since the Armada list was fairly basic. I am assuming that the three Marine variant lists in the magazine actually replace the Armada list.

Anyway, since my Marines are a traitor legion, and since the actual list that I use wont change the minis that I will buy much, I will build a crusading Chapter fleet. This means that I can add a Fortress Monastry at a later date if I change my mind, even just as a modelling project, and it means that I get Thunderhawk Anihiliators as standard, which are nice.

That is it for now. It doesnt change my first month of purchases at all, and I will get back and post those here soon. I am itching to get started on this, but I am worried that this enthusiasm will leave when I look at rows of undercoated Epic minis.

Next is to sort out what to get via mail order, and when to get them.

EDIT: I should perhaps also mention that I told a gaming friend about this project, and - when he had stopped laughing - he asked how much of my budget I would be sending to Tuffskull to get him to paint things up for me!  :D  An interesting idea... I am doing the maths now!

I should have known. The last two weeks have gone really slowly, with not much to do, and then as soon as January hits, I get busy. As a consequence, I wanted to post yesterday, but as of now I have done almost nothing. So, loads to get done.

What I have managed to do is make a large paint order which hopefully will arrive soon, and sort out my paint schemes. I dont go to the extreme of test painting, but I do organise the main colours. The biggest problem here was the Epic bases, but I now have an idea of what I am looking for. I also checked through the mini archive to see what I already had available to use and I put together some ideas for Epic Ork objectives which I will share later.

I want to start this with the necessary units in order to bring both forces up to the required points values as quickly as possible, and I want the first few months to be split fairly evenly between the two games.

Funds - Month One
Previous month: 0

Epic Ork Warband: 12
Gothic Marine Strike Cruiser: 6
Gothic Marine Strike Cruiser: 6

Funds remaining: 1

This is probably not a surprising initial set of purchases. The two Strike Cruisers give a nice and flexible base for future purchases. The Epic Orks can be distributed in a number of ways, but generally the choice is two warbands, or one Big Warband. Since this will be my Big Mekboss (Warlord) Warband, it will be Big. In addition, my Nob stands will vary the minis as much as possible for two reasons. Firstly, it makes each Nob stand a bit different, and secondly, if I plan it carefully, I will be able to make five Nob stands instead of just the four. This means that I will have an additional Warlord base available. I could simply replace one of the existing Nob stands with a Warlord and keep with the four, but I want the force as flexible as possible and an additional Warlord stand makes this easier, although it is one extra base to paint which costs zero points towards the total.

My Big Warband will simply be joined by four Kommando stands, and all of the extra bits will be swept aside for a future month.

This means, in terms of points...

Points - Month One

Previous Month
= Gothic: 0
= Epic: 0

Additions

= Gothic: 290
=- Gothic Marine Strike Cruiser [145]
=- Gothic Marine Strike Cruiser [145]

= Epic: 450
=- Ork Big Warband [350]
=- Ork Kommandos x4 [100]
=- Ork Warlord [0]

Now, to get assembling and painting. I will post as soon as there has been any progress worth mentioning.

Well, I now have the dubious honour of being the owner of two Gothic Marine Strike Cruisers, and twenty four bases of Orky goodness. But, I am getting very worried. Most others participating in this are proudly displaying wonderfully painted miniatures, while I am just about to start undercoating mine!

I have assembled two Strike Cruisers, which were possibly the least fun assemblies for Gothic vessels that I have done in a while. They seem to be plagued by most of the common problems. The peg and holes dont fit too well, you need to actually file inside assembly grooves, and the damn things droop due to being front heavy! They are smaller than I remember, too. Still, they are now together.

I have also put together 24 Ork bases - 12 Boyz, 4 Gretchin, 4 Kommandos and 4 Nob stands. All I now have to do is put the finishing touches to my Ork Warlord - Big Mekboss Lugnutz. This guy is huge, and bigger than I thought that he would be. But, I am quite happy with him and I have converted him. I was faced with either simply using an existing Nob mini (too dull and ordinary), getting the Ork character pack (?7 for just the one guy) or putting one together myself. I wont tell any more, and I will put up a picture as soon as I can.

I should also explain how I am doing this thing. I have a pot (ex-green curry paste, so all of my minis now smell nice and spicey). I simply put the minis from my collection into this pot at the beginning of the month and draw the units from this. This means that I wont use anything that I shouldnt by mistake. I have used the usual units for the Orks (Boyz stands are four Boyz and a one of the Heavy Boyz), except that all of my Nobz stands are simply three Nobz and two Heavy Boyz (which relects their stats as well as allowing me to build more than four and I dont like the idea of Nobz stands with five identicle minis on it).

The only changes that I have made to this is that I have added a few first edition Ork Boyz, simply swapping an older one for a latest version which is thrown in the bitz box. The only other change is that my Warlord stand started out as three Nobz and two Heavy Boyz, but now looks nothing like that. If someone is replicating this, then they can still just use the original five minis.

That is all for now. I will attempt to get the whole lot undercoated and as far through as I can this week, although it is a busy week for me. I am a bit worried that I wont be able to get the whole lot done in time, and it will be an effort. We will have to see how it all goes.

Woo Hoo! My paints arrived this morning, so I can now start actually slapping colour on fast! In the last week or so, I have planned out the remaining three weeks purchases and have a clear idea of where I will be going for this. In someways, it takes a bit of the fun out of the next few months, but it also saves on postage as I can get all that I need in one go.

More updates when I have got some way along with the painting.

Well, as a few others have started taking stock with seven days to go, I just cant avoid doing the same.

The bad news

Both of the Gothic Strike Cruisers are base coated... or they should be. I am at the irritating stage where every time I look at them I discover a couple of white spots of undercoat showing through!

The Ork force is getting the first colour applied (yellow), and I had forgotten how much of a pain it was to paint yellow in a nice, even coat. They are requiring at least two coats each. Not what I need at this stage.

It has also not escaped my notice that I am the only member of this thing that has not posted a picture yet... mainly due to not having anything worth photographing.

The Plus Side

I keep telling myself that all the troops are based, and primed, and so I am actually further through than I seem to be.

I have all of the paints that I need!

Fresh troops arrived this morning, and I have everything that I need for month two, and even a third of month three and half of month four as well.

There is still a LOT to get done!

Well, four days of the first month left to go, and I am fighting down a rising sense of panic! I am rapidly facing the situation that I simply wont be able to finish this months batch in time. In that case, I guess that I need to finish them off while I work on next month... I dont know how this should be resolved.  :{

Anyway, progress so far. The two Strike Cruisers are looking OK, and I am concentrating on these to make sure that they are as close to finished as possible. They have a full blue heraldry, and now I 'just' need to pick out the weapons and details (I dont put windows on my vessels except for the odd exception - Chaos cruisers - as I think that these would be pretty much outdated as a structural weakness, and the lights would all be off in battle anyway). Hopefully, these will be done in time, although not varnished.

The Orks are looking a lot worse. As of right now, I have only put the first yellow coat on them. I need to shade the yellow, and then get to work on the green (skin), purple (details), metal (weapons) and other assorted colours to make the Orky, and that doesnt include the bases! I dont think that they will be in full battle dress in time! I will get as far as I can.

A quick progress report as the tension rachets up:

Strike Cruisers - sorted out the metalic areas. Left to do are the running lights (not many), Chapter symbol (I hate these as my freehand is really terrible, and I may leave the chapter symbol blank... but that would be cheating a little...) and the base (repainting it and the ships names). I wont count varnish as I always take picture before the varnish anyway, and I experimenting with Vallejo varnish which is new to me.

Orks - Ummm, yes. No further progress. They are coming with me when I visit the girlfriend this weekend. I concentrated on the Gothic ships to paint first as they dont travel so well.

Well, there is no escaping it now. The first month is over, and I have failed to complete the purchases! I guess that this means that they will carry over to be completed next month. However, I am not too down about it.

Battlefleet Gothic - Imperial Marines

My two Strike Cruisers for this month are complete, except for a coat of varnish. While I think that this is very important (especially with Vallejo as the paint seems to get rubbed off very easily) I am not counting this as finished. This is because I need to do at least two coats of varnish and the vessels are playable right now.

So.... on with the pictures...

And...

Post subject:  TOFG 1: A Gamer's Tale

Generally, I am happy with how these turned out. The base blue coat went better than I expected, and I was worried that they would be too dark. As it turns out, they are darker than these pictures imply (a bit flash heavy here) but they have a decent highlight to spot them on the black background.

There are a lot fewer additional detail colours than I am used to with the Chaos and Imperial Cruisers. I had to stop myself adding too much unnecessary detail and too many colours. My freehand and other details are pretty awful normally, and so I usually fall back on simple shapes and other designs. My Dark Talons simply have three 'slash marks' in orange, which is fairly easy (although they are never as even as I would like) and look OK. The base has the name printed on a sticky label. I also add four small triangles to denote the aspects of the ship (front, port, starboard and rear) to help in the middle of battle both for my firing and getting hit.

The depressing thing is that now that I have two light cruisers for this fleet, it has become my second more complete and coherent fleet for the game! That says a lot about how I usually sort out my painting and constructing!

Epic Armageddon Spanna Spidaz Orks

These guys are really behind. I will aim to get them finished off in the send month, alongside all of the additions that I will need to deal with. I will post pictures when they are at a reasonable stage.

I must admit that this type of event really does keep enthusiasm high. While I have performed worse in terms of progress than I would have liked, I am still enthusiastic about getting the lot painted.

The Story So Far...

OK, to recap, last month I set myself up with two Gothic Marine Strike Cruisers, and 25 stands of Ork infantry... and didnt finish it all. This month, I have one Gothic vessel, larger, and a total of over 40 Ork infantry stands. This is going to be interesting!

I wonder how many of last months purchases I could get painted up for this months ?25 budget...?

This month sees the arrival of the big guns, and a little horde!

Funds - Month Two
Previous Month: +1

Epic Ork Warband: 12
Gothic Marine Battle Barge: 15

Funds remaining: -1

Yes, I am getting another Epic Ork warband! ?:L ?This will allow me to combine the troops with a few left over from last month, and create more Warbands, in turn pushing up the points total fairly nicely. These guys will form two 'standard' Ork Warbands to increase the number of activations that I will have on the table, and be joined by a Stormboyz Mob, which are one of my favourite units for the greenskins.

I will still have no armour, which should confuse any opponents for now, but I will then be above the points minimum and free to add a few tanks later on. I just like my horde armies and the infantry were always the ones that I could identify with most.

On the Gothic Marines side, a Battle Barge will add some much needed hitting power to the force. One of these things is fairly necessary, although I would rarely field more than one. I will go back to lighter vessels in future months. In addition, this will also put me within reach of the minimum points value nicely, taking the pressure off future months.

Month three should see me adding some more diverse units to both forces, and hopefully getting less to paint landing on the workbench!

Points - Month Two

Previous Month
= Gothic: 290
= Epic: 450

Additions

= Gothic: 715
=- Gothic Marine Battle Barge [425]

= Epic: 1250
=- Ork Warband [200]
==- Ork Kommandos x4 [100]
=- Ork Warband [200]
==- Ork Boyz x4, Gretchin x4 [100]
=- Ork Stormboyz Mob [150]
==- Ork Stormboyz Unit x2 [50]

So, thats it for the second month. I just have to add the other 25 stands from last month to the total that are half completed! This should be interesting.

I should also mention that I have managed to overspend by one pound this month, and this will be taken from next months total funds.

Post subject:  TOFG 1: A Gamer's Tale

At this point, I would just like to point out that stormseer didnt finish his painting this month!  :D

As you may well have realised, all is not well in the CyberShadow depot. This should be obvious by the fact that I have not posted all month.

Anyway, a round up of the shame and trauma. In the first month, I managed to finish the two Gothic Marine Strike Cruisers. However, the main Ork Big Warband which included my Warboss (Big MekBoss Lugnutz) was left unfinished.

Month two saw the arrival of a Gothic Marine Battle Barge, along with two more Ork Warbands, and an Ork Stormboyz Mob. None of these have been finished!

In general, this is not good news for me. I am seriously behind, and will have to get a lot of painting done to complete this lot in time for the close of this event. However, these first two months do represent the bulk of the forces, particuarly the Orks, and the second half of this thing should have very few minis to paint each month. So, there is a chance that I will have a lot more opportunity to finish the backlog along side the regular purchases.

I wont post pictures yet. I dont like doing that until things are finished. I probably wont actually wait until it is all done, and I will try to get pictures up and displayed as soon as possible.

This is a little depressing, but I remain determined, no matter how naive that may be!

Due to the fact that I am really not very good at this, I am going to be a little more secretive this month. This is also due to the fact that, had I completed the painting up to this point, I would be most of the way there to the minimum totals required. All that is left to reach the targets are a few more points for Gothic, and three objectives for Epic. And so, that is exactly what will happen this month. However, I will not reveal exactly what the composition of the objectives are until I have something to illustrate them. I wont wait for them to be painted, since we could be around and waiting for a long time, but I will just give a total cost to start with, and break that down with a picture when they are assembled.

Also of note is the fact that I purchased the Forge World escorts just before the price rise, and so are counted at the original cost.

Funds - Month Three
Previous Month: -1

Gothic Marine Forge World Gladius x3: 9
Epic Ork Objective 01: 3
Epic Ork Objective 02: 4.50
Epic Ork Objective 03: 7

Funds remaining: 0.50

Points - Month Three

Previous Month
= Gothic: 715
= Epic: 1250

Additions

= Gothic: 850
=- Gothic Marine Gladius x3 [135]

= Epic: 1250
=- Epic Ork Objective x3 [0]

Well, that is the plan. More details soon, and hopefully more updates this month! Thanks for being patient, and wish me luck.

Well, I may be really bad at this painting stuff, but I do claim the honour of being the first person to post a picture of an Epic objective. Sure, it is not painted in any way, and only really requires sticking the thing to a base... but still.

I feel that, since I have given nothing away about the objectives for my Epic Orks, I really should show you guys what I have in mind as quickly as possible.

So, here is objective one - Da Blu Objektive: Da Loot.
