WOW! ...And you made these yourself right? How did you achieve that stripey look on the bunkers?
Very cool indeed!

Cheers! :)

Actually we have had three battles on the trench line already.

In each case we used a scenario I developed.  The scenario involves 1,500 points of defenders vs. 2,000 points of attackers.  The attacker would be able to recycle units that get wiped out.  The Defender will have the benefit of an artillery barrage hitting the attacker.  This barrage takes the form of two Earthshaker templates hitting the enemy every turn.  We where using the new 4th edition rules where no guessing is required just place the template, roll 2D6 for scatter and take the highest.  I also wanted to add some importance to actually holding the trench.  So I stole this idea from Warhammer fantasy battles.  Any unit out of the trench attacking a unit in the trench would need a six to hit.  This way there was a great incentive for actually getting into the trench and fighting within it.  It did a good job of encouraging the attacker to attack up the trench line and gave the feel I wanted to achieve.

The attacker would have two missions.  The Primary mission is to destroy all three bunkers.  Second would be to wipe out the enemy defenders creating a breach in the defensive line and allow a breakout by mechanized forces.  Attacker has the first turn and the game would have a variable turn length.

The first game was played against a Crimson Fist army.  My Dark angles attacked the trench line. Assault squads charged in against a hail of Crimson fist fire.  The defenders were thinly stretched but the artillery of devastating.  By the end I had destroyed all three bunkers but a small group of Fist still held the trench.  The trench line was broken but the Fist had managed to hold of the onslaught and fall back in good order.  The follow on would not be as quick and decisive as hoped.

The Second battle saw my Dark angels defend the line against a huge speed Freaks army.  Needless to say it was scary to see 2,000 points of Orks racing toward you.  Andy, my opponent, being the nice sportsman that he is chose not to recycle units; he really didn?t need to.  This game was brutal.  In the first turn of shooting I lost 25 marines to the Ork shooting.  For those of you with fast math skills you can see there where a lot of dice being thrown my way it was not a lucky day for the Marines.  Still there was pay back when one the first turn both artillery templates scored direct hits on the warboss?s truck and then on him; one dead warboss.

?There must be something wrong with our bloody armor today? - Master Cruz

The Orks stormed the trenches and the Dark Angels were cut down by the overwhelming horde.  Still their sacrifice was not in vain.  The Speed Freaks only had few units that could deal with the tough armor of the bunkers.  The bunkers became islands of resistance against the green horde; a very nice 40K image.  Those units that could deal with the bunkers got delayed in close combat.  By the end of the game one bunker stood with a marine tactical squad still shooting into the horde.  The Ork offensive was halted.

The last game was a role reversal.  The Orks defended the trenches as my Dark Angels attacked.  Once again the artillery proved devastating to my poor marines.   The Orks countered charged with three Dreadnoughts and the warboss equipment himself and his nobz with mega armor.  My firepower took down two of the dreads in quick succession.  But one took all that I threw at it and pinned an assault squad in place.  The squad was slowly ground down.  The mega armor orks took a beating as they plowed with great stubborn ness across the field.  The warboss did manage to attack one of the tactical squads providing fire support before being cooked in his mega armor by a melta gun. What a way to go.

The other interesting combat was my Chaplain.  Who after destroying one Bunker by using his melta bombs plowed into a squad of grots.  Those poor grots never had a chance.  At games end the orks still held the trenches and one bunker was left standing.  The marines had failed to breakthrough.

So there you have it.

Thanks for sharing - I think I'd like to try this in Epic. You could really have a defensive line in deapth.
