Hey, I'm thinking about making a Necromunda piece, a tower with lights on it. Anyone have any suggestions about how to go about this? Battery powered LED's are expensive, but smaller and easier to manage. Regular lights, ie, christmas lighting, is cheaper, but requires an electrical source. Any comments would be helpful. my 2questions, iblisdrax |

Hi Iblisdrax, if you don't go overboard with the number of Christmas tree lights (e.g. up to around 3 connected in parallel) , you can use a 9V battery without any problem. Also, are you certain about LED costs? They CAN be quite cheap e.g. (quoting from the web) 100 red LEDs for 5US Dollars - and that's not the cheapest either. |

No, I hadnt checked the prices of LED's. If that is the case, I will be going that route, since it allows me much better placement options, and they produce less heat( I think). On a more ambitious note, what do you think about mounting a 80 mm pc case fan? I have never attempted to run one outside of the pc case, so I haven't looked at how to wire the thing. my 2cents, iblisdrax |

You're right, they do emit less heat, so unless you're gaming in a very cold place, LEDs are better. I'll admit I don't know the voltage/current requirements of a pc fan, but I shouldn't think you'd need anything too complicated to run one - I believe they run off DC from the computer power supply, and could be happy with a simple battery and switch. I used a pair of burnt out ones once as scenery, for Necromunda too. A less sane idea I once had for an 'active' bit of Nec. scenery (as opposed to passive non-functional stuff) was of a clockwork carillon mounted on a base to look like archaeotech playing some suitable tune (i.e. not Jingle Bells) for tense shoot-outs. I'll admit I'm a fan of Sergio Leone's spaghetti Westerns, and they used this to good effect (a clockwork tune, not archaeotech!) for the climactic duel in 'For a Handful of Dollars More'. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Sounds a cool project... I have a little 70mm PC fan that runs from a 9V block battery, so your 80mm one should be fine I would imagine. I also aquired three giant 150mm computer fans from a mate- I'm still thinking about how to work them into a huge 'atmosphere processing plant' piece or something like that for my Necromunda games. ? ![]() |

oooo...those sound cool. Ive seen the 120mm fans in a case, and they are monsters. You could mount them vertically on top of short towers as the exhaust ports. Another cool thing would been the monster sized heat sinks that they have in some old Dell computers (and others I would imagine). Those would look really good. my 2cents, iblisdrax |

Good idea... I put a photo of them in my Briefcase: here ..look in the Necromunda section. There is also one of a rather smaller piece I made a while ago- the 'powerconverter.' |

Nice stuff, Storm! ? I made some Epic Scale Necromunda terrain from all sorts of bitz! It was a fun project and I add to it occasionally. It was fun to fight amongst them with some Epic forces in the past... |

A sidebar - Check out the Gladiator site, some new 15 & 25mm terrain which could be used for Epic, 40K, etc. ? And new pics of some of their 6mm armies too! ![]() |

I have been thinking for some time about incorporating soem LEDs into my yet to be finished Epic scale ruins. What I want is flickering red and yellow lights to look like fires are burinign inside the smashed buildings. My problem is that I have not been able to find a suitably cheap flickering mechanism ...Any ideas? ![]() |

If you want to try your hand at circuitry, try to look for a simple oscillator or 'flip-flop' circuit, which should do the trick. A suitable IC can cost less than a dollar, and if you drop me a line I'll send a link for a simple circuit. You can even find LED blinkers or oscillators on Ebay, costing very little. Or else cannibalize one of those Christmas tree sets which have a 'flickering' circuit (i.e. not the pilot lamp type) and use its hardware. ![]() |

A friend of mine mentioned to one of his company's suppliers that he was thinking about doing a project with LEDs and within a couple days their sales rep brought him a box of about 500. Not that that really helps you at all ![]() As far as flickering, I know I've seen such things in model train sets, so checking out a train shop might be a good source. Plus, they always have cool stuff for modeling... |
