How do you manage to paint a smooth and even coat of white?
With a brush there always seems to be brush marks visible, no matter how many coats I paint.
With a spray can, there are no brush strokes but the surface looks like it had been repeatedly stabbed with a needle.
Should I add detergent to remove surface tension?
Use thinner paint?
Use a different kind of brush?

The only way to get a really good clean coat is to use many layers of thin paint.
Make sure you let each layer dry before applying a second or else you will ruin the lower layer and end up with ridges.
Its tedious, but if you must paint white...

White is one of the hardest colours to get to come out well especially if you're trying to paint it over a black primer.
The only way to do it in my experience is to keep layering white until it comes out smoothly.
Godd luck!

I never base coat white, I spray black, gray, etc., and touch up afterwords with a watered down version of the sprayed color ...

Using a light coloured base coat before you do the white helps.
E.G. I undercoat almost everything black...
Areas which I want to be white, I first paint with Space Wolves grey, bleached bone etc...
That way I only need to do two or three coats of white over the top and still get a smooth finish.
Leaving some of that base coat showing through in recesses provides shading to the white as well.

Thanks for tips everybody!
Now I have some hope that the shoulder pads of my Black Templars may actually even improve someday...

If I have used a black undercoat (which I usually do as it seems better), then to paint white I always do a couple of layers of thin space wolves grey. It seems to go on very well, covering the black paint. I will then go straight to white, or maybe add bleached bone first.
