As my entire Chaos fleet is getting a revamp I started to look closer at my Battleships. There was always something about them which bugged me but I couldn't quite figure out what it was.
Now I think I know why. I think it is the positioning of the bridge. Located much further back than the modles natural center of gravity it just reminds me of a modern bulk carrier. Not the sleek streamlined shape of a warship. As a result I've decided to remodel all my battleships to have smaller or lower set bridges moved further to the front. I think it gives a much more sleek design.

The first ship to undergo surgery was my Super battleship. I replaced the entire superstructure with some plastic cruiser parts, widened the gun batteries a bit and rebuilt the prow slightly. I am definitely much happier with this version than the old one. Next is a Despoiler whichI think will get a repulsive bridge instead of the larger battleship bridge. the Desolator is retty good as it is although I was thinking of widening it slightly or changing the guns on it.

Using some spare parts I also played around a bit with an Imperial cruiser kit. I think this could be some kind of pre-heresy Space marine Strike cruiser or something...

Well it's not quite sinished yet as I still need to do something about the engine and detail the launch bay area a bit. Still it is fairly siple if you've got the parts:

Remove the prow and replave it with a Chaos Cruiser prow split in half with some plasticard on the inside. I also glued two Chaos Launch bays together and stuck on the inside although that strictly speaking isn't necessary.
Using a sharp knife remove part of the superstructurefrom the second lance battery/antennae hole just enough to make room for an Imperial Battleship bridge. (For some reason I got an extra one with one of my Imperial ships) Fill any gaps with a bit of putty.
Fairly simple to do really (well if you've got the parts that is :p  )
I was thinking about adding some blast shields to the rear near the engines.

Once again, I am highly impressed with your skills as a naval architecht!
Your Fleets are fantastic. ?

If I had BFG opponents still (they all got posted and moved away - a hazard when one is in the Navy!), I would be trying to emulate your efforts, though at the moment I feel the need to add boilers and smoke stacks to everything in sight!

I will have a look this weekend for those bits you are after

Very nice work, Chris - and it inspired me to do some Chaos BFG stuff - the weird thing being that it's the paint that inspired me, not the fantastic conversion work this time round. More later.... :O

The pre-heresy ship is my favourite too and I echo the sentiment for more pics......partly because in that particular angled shot the plasticard in the prow centre looks a bit weird.
Fantastic work WmN

I'll snap some more piccies soon. I want to finish the engines and rear part first though so it might be a couple of days.

The pre-heresy ship is nice but I still love the superbattleship.

Thanks.

As promised here's a few more shots of the Pre Heresy ship.

Warghoul class Heavy Strike Cruiser

Imperial scholars believe this ship to be a prototype heavy cruiser used by the Space marine Legions. The Design shows influences which would later be used in the designs for the Lunar Class cruiser as well as the Space Marine Strike Cruiser.
Somewhat larger than the later Strike Cruiser the ship was intended to bridge the gap between the pre heresy Battle barges and the Devastation Cruisers. Although the Styx had been deployed in this role it was thought that the marine Legions needed a dedicated ship with more punch for regular fleet engangements. Only one ship was ever constructed and was thought to be lost during the initial stages of the Heresy. Later analysis indicate that the ship most likely either defected or was scavanged by Traitor boarding crews.
No plans for further ships were ever developed as the reorganisation of the Adeptus Astartes had eliminated the need for a Heavy Cruiser class ship.
