I can help out with any specific questions you might have about the tournament as I ran it on the day. Basically the premises was simple, I knew there were pockets of players here in Western Australia and I wanted to get them together. The club that Justin (Magic Number) and I help to run has been building up interest in BFG for about 4 months. We got 7-8 people up to speed in our club then went visiting the other local clubs to weasel out the other players. In all we had 14 turn up on the day and we have firm hopes of getting more next year. The trick has been to build up the interest, get everyone to try the game and to keep wetting the appetites of players with a little bit more information about the tournament each week.
I only have a handful of the lists played on the day, from the guys who mailed me in advance. There are as follows:

Tournament format was 4 x 1.5 hour games with two standard misssions and two battlefield missions. The latter gave everyone the chance to use the celestial phononena rules, with nebulas, plasma clouds, warp rifts and all manner of other things making space an even more horrific place to fight a battle.
To simplify scoring a maximum of 20 points was available for destroying or crippling your opponents fleet. To keep it really simple a 1000 point fleet gave up a maximum of 20 battle points (1000/50 - 20pts). There were then 5 extra points available for achieving a secondary objective in the mission, such as boarding hulks, capturing the opponents admiral, etc. Finally there were points for painting and sportsmanship. The latter I wouldn't do again because the guys were so nice to each other they all did a little too well in this category!
There were some absolutely epic battles and in our small hall the cries of "BFI!" came thick and fast. Monumental day and one I hope to write up in a bit more detail for Warprift over XMAS (if they'l have the submission).
