Post subject:  Waaargh Grimcog: An Unusual Looking Necron Army [56k Beware]

This is an army i finished almost a year ago now, but as the Tournament of it's Debute begins to roll around again (and with the Goliath gang for necromunda from whence it sprang once more in action) i am finally preparing to work on the next phase of it's production. since i've joined this place since that time, i thought you guys might like to take a look.
these have now been to 2 tournaments, and actually did really well in the second one

(ps: as yet i've no real plans to translate these into epic, though if i had mad-CAD-skills i probably would have)

Sometime last year (or year before last at this point) i got it into my head, then, proving its bloodthirsty nature, preparing the army did this to me...

(that photo was taken just now, and it hasnt come out terribly well. it's also healed for the majority of a year, suffice to say, i sliced open my knee pretty much to the bone and had to have bigass stitches in)

anyway, after taking a bunch of time off, i've finally finished the army (for now)

I know you already know this - however I am going to say it anyway, that army is simply ... AWESOME!! :)

I am SO jealous! Grand job, and I can't decide whether the Monolith or the piggies are best :)
So do you use it as an Ork army or a Necron one? Or both?

WOW !
I never really liked Necrons and the "new fluff", but that army has a perfect style.
It reminds me a bit Invader Zim, especially the piggy and the tomb spiders :)

Oh and btw, in 2008 I went to hospital, opened my leg while working on a warhammer 40k cathedral...

Neat.

But like people have said: are they Necrons? Or Orks? Or both?

If they're Necrons, why do they look like Orks? If Orks, same question?

That is one of the coolest 40k armies I've seen.

thanks all, i'm always pleased with how well received the army is. they're definitely played using the Necron rules (i suppose i could make them as an ork list, but with 30 boyz they'd not do so well... plus nightbringer is the most badass dude ever.

the fluff behind the army (which is written in typical Overwrought prose as army-fluff almost always is (as part of the massive self-mocking that this army is) is basically that a Mekboy (Mad Mek Grimcog) builds a massive machine (urged on by the voices in his head that get stronger the more bionics he gives himself) that is supposed to be some sort of super-weapon or super-shield or some sort of tellyporta, turns out it's a bit of all 3, and the ork army disappears, only to reappear centuries later as the clanking horde of Iron Orks, who cannot ever truly die. Doomed (or blessed, to most orky perspectives) to eternal combat, they lurch about and blow stuff up. its all quite fun.

a while back i decided that the necron codex was awful. so who, i asked myself, would make awful necrons? the answer, was orks. plus, ork conversions are always fun and a bit silly, which is why i play 40k. so i started from there.

the scarabs are from Malifaux, they're called Steampunk Abominations or Clockwork Horrors or something like that... (they're also hella fiddly to assemble, as their front legs are all seperate pieces)

"We'll Be Back" indeed.

so, i'm playing with these boys at Wintercon. all rather last minute, and its an 1850 tourney. so that meant i had two choices.

i could give my entire army disruption fields (horrendous waste of points) or i could make some more models over the course of three days

so, is anyone surprised that i went with option two?

As always JTG, simply spectacular. This was a fantastic idea for an army and the new additions uphold the theme very well.

Wow ! Love the whole lot ! Very inspiring. :-)

Got to say the rise of these beautifully converted "counts as" armies has been one of my biggest inspirations getting back in to the hobby (big up Dave Taylor too.) Brings the creativity back into it, only wish i had the skill/time - bring back Rick Priestly's shampoo bottle imperial grav tank i say! :-)

Can you point me towards where i can see some of our other collections JTG ?

Post subject:  Re: Waaargh Grimcog: An Unusual Looking Necron Army [56k Bew

thanks guys
i have to say, while building them was frustrating at times, having finished, i think these destroyers are some of my favourite models of the set. i'm fairly tempted to make another batch or two of them (plus destroyers are basically the only thing in the codex that arent overpriced) but i have so many projects to work on that it probably wont happen anytime soon (and i suspect that the new codex will annihilate my enjoyment of the army. we'll see)

as to my other work. most of it isnt as interesting as this (this was my first 'spend a lot of time making the army' build, and my next few projects that are underway will not be revealed until they're done) but there are a few others that you may enjoy

i have some epic stuff in the ToEG section here (necron army is nice but simplistic, the bloody hand/ crimson bondsmen has lots more work into it)

the other forum that i spend a lot of time on, WargamerAU has a few other diaries

This one is my Nomad force for infinity
This one is my Warhammer Fantasy Slaanesh Daemons army (note. boobs-aplenty. probably not safe for little tykes)
This one is a 2000pt Warmachine vs Hordes battle report (under the mk1 rules, it equates to about 150-175 in the new rules) which might be worth reading (or not, hell if i know) more pictures of the models can be found here and another set of pics from a different 2000pt game here (also for some cute warmachine inspired drawings
this one is a bunch of my tyranids painted. not bad, but not particularly inspired either.
and last but very not least. This one is the Orky diary that first inspired me to work on the above necrons. its a necromunda gang using orks and grots. it's got lots of nice conversion work. pretty happy with it.

plus of course, i will put up my new projects here as they are completed XD
