In between a few commisions I'm working on at the moment I've decided to start work on my Space Hulk figures. I want to improve my skills at 28mm but am not really fussed with turfing out bog standard GW nicely painted minis...got to go a bit further! Nowm i'm not saying these are going to amazing or anything like some of the top heavy metal stuff but i see the terminators as a chance to start developing my own definitive style at 28mm for commission work...as such I've been researching colour theory today and trying to apply it to the first terminator. I've only done the red but what do people think? Any hints and tips on painting black would be great! ![]() The terminators are going to be a Blood Angels succesor chapter painted up in halved black and red. I may attempt to mess around with Non Metallic Metals but shall see what the rest of the model looks like first! Oh...and for those that I'm working on commisions for: the reason this chap is taking my time today is because It's pissing down outside! I need to undercoat a batch of mini's before hand and that isn't happening in the rain! YRs, R> |

I've not gotten around to painting mine yet seeing I still have a good bit of 40k stuff to go and a fair bit of epic as well but here's my take since I can't see your photo (stupid work proxy blocking all image hosting sites) Black is a fairly difficult color to do right. You can get away with a little blending to gray close to the edge or to help define the shape of a panel, but in either event you need a fairly sharp and clean pure white highlight to get the best contrast to make it pop. After that, wash it in black to tone it back to match your lighting and emphasize shadows if you want. |

The split colours confused me for a bit, wasn't sure if it was meant to be spotlights on a model in the dark or what but I see now. Looks nice! Tip for black; it's best to highlight black with an mix of both dark blue (Regal Blue say if it's still called that) and white mixed in to the black rather than just white. |

yeah I was just reading about blue...I imagine the power armour (black) to be quite glossy so am going to try achieving something like that... |

Try mixing black ink with blue ink for shading the black areas. This will give them a more photographic quality without resorting to the usual gray/white highlighting that most people use. |

There is a guide somewhere on the web as to how military display modelers do black, can't find it though. They used a bit of it in a GW article on painting black templars. Think it relies on a shiney finish and display lighting though. Could be wrong and confusing it with another way to do black ![]() I actually thought the model was an experiment with light sourcing, so half the terminator in shadow. To find out its a half and half model isn't as cool as that but there is no denying its very eyecatching and the red is excellent. |

That looks really good. I'll have to steal it when I get around to doing my Space Hulk guys and re-painting my 28mm blood angels. Any chance of a colour recipe or some sort of guide/tute? I'm not quite up to your standard so a bit of technique coaching would be great (ie, put this highlight here) ![]() |

MoK, do not try this on one of those you photographed, just in case it turns out badly. Try a drybrush of dark brown on the black; followed by a dark rust red. Progress to lighter colours to your taste. The final brush could be a sand colour. Will complement the red grandly. |

Quote: (The_Real_Chris @ Nov. 12 2009, 19:50 ) I actually thought the model was an experiment with light sourcing, Kind of....although he's done in two halved colours the light is meant to be coming from one side...I don't know why but for this guy i hose behind him to the right (storm bolter side)... About to do a bit more but think i will put the light somewhere a bit more sensible on the other models...time to research metallics i guess! R> |

Well...here's one for TRC...decided to highlight the black in blue...think it gives the correct kind of effect.... ![]() ...the actual source of light is a bit skewed and from all other the place but it's been an interesting experiment! Now just to apply to the rest of the miniature! After that I'm expecting the other terminators to be KickAss! |

Very sweet. I'd like to see it done nearly monochrome (or diachrome in this case?) with minimal color on the trim. |

Something I'd like to try yes...but the space hulk termies are too sweet a model not to pick out all those details...we'll see where things take me! R> |

The blue highlights really make the mini pop. Well done, MoK! ![]() |
