Post subject:  How big should a Norse God be?

I'm planning on sculpting a number of Norse Gods for skirmish gaming – basically because I want them! I'm hoping I might be able to sell some as well, to help offset the costs. But I'm unsure how big to do them.

I'm leaning towards a 54mm height for a god like Odin, as that will give me the chance to go to town on sculpting and detailing. But is that too big?

I could do them a 28mm, but then there'd be little to separate them from regular Vikings, and it would limit the quality as well.

Doing them at 54mm would mean I could do the Dwarves and Elves at 28mm height, and keep them in some sort of scale to the Gods. Trolls would have to be about 60 – 65mm, Giants 80 – 90mm.

So, a 54mm Odin – too big, or the right size?

Cheers,
Michael Lovejoy

I feel your reasoning might be spot on. They should be larger than life(size).

Your main concern will probably be the Midgaardworm. At least nine feet long it would need to be. (Around the table and then enough to bite itself in the tail...)

54mm sounds cool.

lol :D

...And the Fenris Wolf would need to be large enough to swallow a standard lightbulb. :p

ROFL!!!!

I'd make them at least head&shoulders taller than your tallest warrior models, so if your warriors are 30mm to top of head, the gods need to be almost 40, 35mm warriors (the typical "28mm figure" today) would need 45+mm tall gods.

Okay, I'll try a few different sized armatures, and see what I think's best; if the figure looks halfway decent, I'll post some pics.

Have you seen Bronze Age's 30mm Norsk Gods?

Yeah, I had a look at those, Otter - to be honest, I don't like them much!
I just don't think they are very well sculpted. The Thor model especially seems to have no right shoulder at all. Of course, if mine don't turn out any better, I'll just drop the whole idea real PDQ.  :vD

I've decided after much discussion and measuring of the available space in a 9" spin mould, that I should go for 40mm size figures. The first armature is ready, and as soon as I get a spare hour or two, I'll start on Odin's face. I'll post pics if they're worth seeing...
