One thing I've found looking for work as a sculptor is that most companies want 28mm - which until last week is a scale I'd never tried!

So I did a quick sculpt of a 28mm ronin samurai, got some feedback, cried a bit, and started again. Here's the second try, which I'm pretty happy with...

Regards,
Reaver

First off, it's doubtless better than anything I could do.

Now:

Left arm longer than the right?
Hips set too wide (For a man) apart?

I assume you're going for 'heroic' scale rather than realistic scale, as your Ronin is 5 heads tall rather than 7 and a half heads tall.

The arms are both the same length - it's sculpted over a proprietary armature. It actually looks a fair bit different in real life than it does in the pic!

As for the out-of-proprtion, 'herioc' style - I'm afraid that's 28mm for you! Nobody wants figures that are absolutely accurate; instead they want figures that will fit in with their existing range. It's actually quite a tough lesson to learn, because I'm used to working from carefully measured anatomical drawings; all that goes out of the window at 28mm.

Regards,
Reaver

More pics from more angles would help us see!

He's awesome, really. The only complaint I would have is that the pose looks a little awkward and not very dramatic. But the sculpting is superb.

ANd of course you had to produce this just after I finished reading a book on Samurai and Ashigaru and Ikko-Ikki and the like.
How do I get one?  :wow:

Thanks for the feedback guys! I'll keep working at 28mm.

Van, sorry! but this sculpt's not getting cast - it was just for practice. But if Samurai, ashigaru and ikko-ikki are what you're after, I'd recommend
Kingsford Miniatures
They've got some lovely stuff!
