Hi all,
slow progress will be made here, but here's the first of my new Nefs - a high speed bomber dirigible which is unfortunately poorly manoeuverable (small tail, see?), and has has a quad gun turret added fore to prevent Aeronefs at higher altitudes from attacking the vulnerable fore top quarter. Unfortunately, this has reduced the design's speed drastically....
With apologies to the B-17G chin turret design for the fluffy rip-off :p

I like it!
It very much looks like a lumbering beast too - what did you use for the hull V?

Aeroplane recce pod. The cross on top looks like it's slipping off down the side - you'll have to take my work for it it's not - weird effect!  :p

Hmmm, doesn't look as if that quad swivels, leaving the bulk of the body unprotected......
But I'm sure you'll have a reasonably plausible explanation  :D
Having said that, very nice, and the paint work almost looks 'cloth' like too....how did you do that?

Ah, there's much smale Maxim (no, not you, Maksim!) guns dotted around the hull.... the forward area was particularly vulnerable to diving Nefs, something which has now been countered by the quads. Of course all the Nef has to do is attak from the rear. But here's the catch - the formation of dirigibles will protect each other, flying a box formation (are we sure these aren't B-17s we're talking about?  :p ). As for the rar ship, ah, that's a special design which hasrearward firing guns as well :p

As for the cloth (sob! someone noticed! I am
so
moved  :;):  :p ) - guess what, white undrcoat and the standard flesh wash over everything - this time heavily watered down to make it look like one big tea-stain.

How does the game play?

I've been curious about it for a while but the game sounds rather simplistic.

It is a bit, which can be a strength.
And - er - I've not played it yet.....

Basically you play scenario-based games with any number of Nefs per side (few or many), depending on the scenario for ratio of forces. The unit stats are simple e.g. generally speaking you need to roll a 6 to hit, and you roll a number of gun dice according to the stats. The design rules for nefs are simple to use, with Aeronefs and dirigibles being split into 5 categories each. There are also rules for monstrous fliers.
Aeronef is set to be linked to the related Aquanef and Land Ironclads.

As regards game play, if I remember correctly it's not I go you go, and uses a lot of D6s... but I must brush up. Tas?

It has relatively simple and quick mechanics, but that doesnt mean the game itself is simplistic. ?
I think there are many nuances that are quite clever actually, and the mechanic allow multiple players and large fleets to play out together on the table.

So to answer your question, I need to know what you think is simplistic

The fact that everything hits on a 6 troubles me.

Is it just that the weapons are assumed to have a limited range so there are no range modifiers?

I can live with a basic system as long as there is a lot of strategy in the actual game when you play it but something with a very basic to-hit system has me rather scared.

OK, I understand your issue now.

Let me assure you that this isnt a problem.  The important thing is that it focuses you on running Squadrons and Divisions of Nefs, not the individua;s themselves.  Kinda like BFG does with simpler rules allowing a great awareness of whats going on rather than getting bogged down as a Captain fighting your own ship

Divisions?

Which explains the simpler system then. How many ships would be in a division?
