Hi all, I love converting models and creating odd beasties which in many instances don't fit into game rules. Now I call myself an opportunistic converter: I don't plan ahead, and I don't aim to eg. convert a Leman Russ to a Leman Russ Exterminator. Listening to Radio Free New Orleans (jazz) I realized that my modelling is a bit like a jam session - I see the bits laid out in front of me, and the things fall into place. Whether it's good or not is another question ![]() So - is this the way you work, or do you plan ahead? I admit I greatly admire the type of modeller who aims to eg build a Malcador and does so. That calls for real skill and discipline. I'm too much of a scatterbrain for that, but I still have fun, so that's ok ![]() |

I'm also a prolific converter and I normally work towards a general idea (eg my Slannesh war engines are themed round 40k daemons). I usually have an idea of what bits I want to go where but once saws, files, knives, drills, pins, glue, filler and the bits box get engaged then it's very much freestyle and it often turns out in a different way than I imagined at the start. I just jam stuff together too. My problem is getting the brain to work out what would llook good on what and get all inspired! |

It depends. I've done conversions that are extensively thought through and stuff that I've just rooted through the box looking for a good bit that strikes my fancy. Normally, though, the former turn out much better. |

Both ways for me too, though most of my conversion work is small time, arm swops and the like which quite often have a more ad-hoc way about them. |

I always, always plan - I have a clear image in my head of what I want to achieve, and work towards that. This is because I can only get motivated to sculpt / convert if I really WANT the new model. The big drawback is that I have a very vivid imagination, so the in-my-head models are always a lot better than the final product... Regards, Reaver |

I've always done conversions with a general goal in mind. Occasionally I get to the actual goal ![]() |

I have a hard time doing impromptu conversions, although my GothicComp conversion was just that (I think I built the whole thing in less than 3 hours on a whim). Most of the time I have an idea of what I want or an image of what I want and work toward it. Although I suppose some of the best conversions are the ones where there is no set goal in mind - just an imagination run wild. |

Well, sometimes an idea just hits me ! I look at some of the bitz I had ... and ... the rest is history ! ![]() ![]() |

I usually have some general idea of what I want to build. Usually inspured by a few bitz I want to use in some way. During the construction process a lot of things just start coming together. Usually I just scuffle through my bitz box and go "Hey! that'd fit perfectly in there..." etc.etc. A bit chaotic but not completely random process. |

I almost always have a definite goal, or plan. Usually I've got the idea, then see which bits I can use to manufacture the idea. Rarely do I look at my bits box, and then "see what I can make" with the bits. Cheers, CF |

Planned. I usually start with an image in my mind then do some form of drawing...can vary from little more than a quick doodle to something more detailed. With regard to bits it depends on the project. For the smaller ones it is primarily green stuff and plasticard. For larger pieces then the parts are bought in specially...granted that invariably leads to instances of "oh I could use one of those" or "that might be handy for (some unspecified future project)" |

Sort of planned for me. Generally I come up with an idea in my head, which usually stays in there and I work off it. Occasionally it spills out onto a piece of paper and I'll do a sketch but not often. I'm not one of those people who tends to think up a set of rules then tries to build a model for it - other way around for me, assuming I even try to make any rules for my creations, usually I just make things because building stuff is like an itch I have to scratch. Of course, it doesnt always work out, and I occasionally end up with a pile of old kak ![]() |
