Here is how a whim evolves. At 1435 today I felt I should get a new army done soon. I'm working on my Andrayads, but being troop-intensive and conversion-intensive, they will take long. Other than titan-armies, which I make a mess of with too much weird stuff and no troops :p , I guess SM armies can be pretty fast to get done: expensivish detachments and power armour (= can be limited in detail). By 1500 I had an army list for 3000 points. Not a 'planned for battle' list, but a 'planned for fast getting-done' list. Here goes:

Support (why do I always start here?): 1 x Reaver, 2 x 2 Thunderbolts.
SMs:
1 Landraider detachment with commander
1 Predator detachment
1 Whirlwind detachment
1 Vindicator detachment (the Shoebox Squadron)
1 Tactical detachment with commanderand shoe- er, Vindicator
1 Tactical detachment with the Vindie.

Not much, eh?
The Thuds will come from my Squatachan army, so that's ok.
The Reaver has to be panted, as I have none done up so far. Unless I find an easy scheme, I'll replace this with more marines.

This leaves:
4 Landraiders, including a commander
4 Whirlwinds
4 Predators
6 Vindicators
12 Rhinos
12 SM stands, including a commander
Not much at all.. let's see how far this gets before it gives up the  ?:) ?
Oh yes - as I'm in a blue 'phase', blue armour - but not UMs. They'll be the - umm - Polar Warriors, or Sky Raiders, or Blue Meanies or something.

Thank you, Primarch.
Meanwhile: have started digging up my Epic SMs... as usual, the troops - Assault, Scouts etc - didn't show up. But I found a couple of characters, so commander-wise that's ok.
Meanwhile, here's what I dug up:

Support:
ignoring diverse Warlords, I found 1 of my 4 Reavers and 6 Warhounds (another 2 painted and stored - never even knew I had 8 doggies!) :p
Marines:
A pile of tactical marines
almost (but not) enough bikes for one detachment - the others have deserted with the scouts and co.
2 stands of Termies
2 Predators
4 Whirlwinds (yay!)
9 Box Vindicators
3 Epic 40K period LRs
2 Epic 40K period Command LRs
9 Epic SM period LRs (for a grand total of 14 LRs)
several Epic SM period Dreads
what seems to be an infinity of Rhinos
1 SM strike cruiser
Robots, Rapiers, Tarantulae
A few Landspeeders
A few box Thunderhawks - too small - I'm using these as Valkyries or Vultures.

Right-ho. For what the Skaven would call a quick-quick army of 3000 points I'll go for:

3LR detachments, including 1 Command LR = 1250
1 Whirlwind det. = 300
2 Vindicator dets = 600

for a total of 2150.
Add two Thunderbolt flights and a Reaver, and hey presto, I'm up to 3100.
Progress: the flights, as stated above, are already painted. I've managed to locate all the Reaver weapons I needed, and have grouped all the tanks in a box  :p

And it sounds like you are like me. The Whims always end up costing in both Money and Time.  :;):

Look forward to the final army photo of the Polar Warriors.

Van, that seems like a very do-able list. Looking forward to seeing pics.  :)

Heck, I don't even WANT to  be a prof - they're all fuzzy-minded crackpotted despots, from what I can see (with one exception, who is only slightly fuzzy-minded, and not a despot at all - although he IS a dentist!).   :p
Nah, I wanna get a better chance than that of going to heaven.  :p  :p Hope my postgrad supervisor doesn't see this....  :(  :p
Anyway, that would be a couple of hundred papers, 3 promotions and at least 25 years in the future. I started out in this research and lecturing lark too late in life to make a Prof before the age of 97.

There are lots of ways to speed that up. Donate a large sum of money to the school, sleep with the department chair, get photos of the department chair and farm animals, heck lots of things you could do.  :p

$? Not feasible. If donate a large amount of models it might work, I have those... but donate those for a Professorship? Good grief, I'd have to have hit my head really hard! Never!
As for the rest - oh yuck....
