So, I've been watching Enterprise 360 on History HD and now want to play some WWII naval games. Problem is I don't want to spend a lot and don't need to add to the paint queue. So I was wondering if anyone's played Axis & Allies War at Sea. How are the minis? How are the rules? I'm looking for a fun, reasonably realistic, game. Any other rules I could use the minis with I might be missing? |

Have you looked at Victory At Sea from Mongoose? It is supposed to be a nice, fun game. |

Mongoose scares me with how they've supported previous products. |

Looks like we might have a winner, and looks like plenty of ships available on eBay. Gonna have to pick us V@S after my move. Now, to find some good online maps of Leyte Gulf so I can set up a good "what if" scenario. (Namely, "what if Halsey had formed TF 34 and left them behind to guard the San Bernardino Straights instead of taking them north with him to engage the empty carriers?") Of course I've got another grand idea of recreating the Battle of Fort Stephenson in 28mm, though I may need to do it in 15mm to keep the table to a reasonable size. |

In case you are interested here's a V@S battle report I posted a while ago. I recommend picking up the Order of Battle supplement as well. There are a lot of ships plus a couple of good rules amendments. Nothing major, mind you, but they make a good game even better IMO. |

Thanks for the link. Looks like V@S is going to be the winner despite my misgivings about Mongoose. I'm assuming the rules are written for 1/2400 ships. Is this correct? |

Oooh, just had an idea. Probably not entirely original, but cuts painting time to printing, cutting, and folding time. Seems there's no shortage of images and dimensions of the vessels involved so take the pictures, scale them down to the appropriate size, and print them on cardstock so they stand on their own and the vessel name printed on the base. |

(Sergeant_Crunch @ May 10 2008,15:43) QUOTE Thanks for the link. Looks like V@S is going to be the winner despite my misgivings about Mongoose. I'm assuming the rules are written for 1/2400 ships. Is this correct? Well, it's not been fixed to a specific scale. A quote from the rulebook: "...we have assumed that miniatures of 1/6000 - 1/2000 scale will be used for most of the battles featured in this game" Most people seem to use Nav War 1/3000 ships, though. That's what I will be using as well. The book comes complete with a large number of cardboard counters. That's what me and my son used in the battle report. ![]() |

Woohoo! My lovely wife has just ordered the VaS and Order of Battle so they should arrive here in time for Father's Day. While I'll probably be using the counters for a while, I'm torn on miniatures. I'm thinking I'm going to go 1:2400 but can't make up my mind between cheap or detail. The Panzerchiffe models are quite affordable, but you don't get what you pay for as the models are very basic. On the other hand, the GHQ miniatures are gorgeous, but $15 and change + S&H for a battleship for a game I honestly won't play as often as my others seems a bit steep. Oh well, won't be buying any minis for it right away so I guess I have some time to contemplate which is more important to me. |

Have you thought of using Victor at Sea rules with Axis & Allier figures? That way you can use prepainted ships but with a decent ruleset. Cheers James |

I'd thought about it, but have decided to go with the GHQ buying them in onesies and twosies. I don't feel like chasing auctions on eBay. Now, if there's a shop where I'm moving to that has a good number of singles I might reconsider. Oh, both books showed up before I went home for lunch. Already through most the of the core rules in VaS. Does any one know if the counter sheets in the back of the book are available in color anywhere? |

Our group plays General quarters 3. Its very simple to pick up on and has greater detail than the previous 2 editions(which are still awesome in their time). Be careful when engaging the Japanese in night time gunnery, they ARE the masters and truly wicked!! ![]() |
