Can someone point me to a good early jet wargame?
It must have altitude rules.
I prefer no Hex mat, but that can be worked around.
Why do you like the game you are recommending?

For what is worth, I loved Air Superiority and Air Strike for Vietnam air action. Infra-red bore-sight rules made for very entertaining dog fights. More modern air planes and missiles and it became more of a push-your-button-first exercise.
Do not really know if it is still in print, but it had a clear blue sky hex map for aerial battle and introduced a ground map for installations and aa in the add-on rules.
Since the ruleset was based on speed, altitude and acceleration (or drag), it would be very simple to translate the hex system into a standard unit of table top length and push around the altitude marker with the plane if that is what you prefer.
What I loved about it was that the rules were based on a very thorough engineering/military evaluation approach to manoeuver and performance.
Manoeuvering and climbing reduced your speed. Diving and giving thrust increased it. Different planes had different min/max speeds and aerodynamics, turning simple numbers into very different flight experiences.
