Hi guys,

I've just started getting into FoW - I've not played any games yet but I love the miniatures.

Here are some WIP shots of my StuGs so far, still lots more detail work to do, plus a little cleaning up.

I've decided to go for the late war hard-edged camo, it's always intrigued me. I've also started to apply some weathering to the Schürzen.











Since taking these photos I have cleaned up the wheels a lot and also painted some more details - so more WIP shots still to come!

Finally finished my StuGs!

I can't decide whether to put the balkan kreuz decals on though. I know that many late-war German vehicles didn't sport them.

Going to be working on my halftrack-mounted panzergrenadiers next.

Made a start on my halftrack-mounted panzergrenadiers the other night. Here are the halftracks next to one of my StuGs.

So how does FoW play as a system? is it worth getting a new scale of models?

It's quite Grandma Wendy in design but has a lot more complexity added. Some things don't quite gel to me (i.e there being no "overwatch" and being able to run your troops right up to within assault range before a machine gun can fire) but it's a pretty good game.

Yup, that pretty much sums it up. Although you do get defensive fire in assault - so that's kinda an abstract way in handling it.

Do correct me if I'm wrong though - I've yet to play a game!!

It can be very abstract at times; as with all games it is not perfect. But still lots of fun!

It does have some good ambush and recon rules (that not enough players use!). It even has rules for off-table artillery support, so you don't *have* to buy the artillery battery to use it.

Overwatch is handled as "Defensive Fire", part of the assault step. It's not entirely unrealistic, since most AT guns and whatnot would prefer to fire at very short ranges.

The game design encourages combined-arms. Tanks move fast and try to hit the enemy artillery. Your artillery is there to pin the enemy, and your infantry are there to dig his infantry off the objective. Your infantry are also there to protect your tanks from his tank-hunters (whether that's AT guns or other infantry).

You have to either shoot the daylights out of a unit to pin it, or you can just drop some mortars on it. Assaulting an unpinned enemy unit is fatal to the assaulters, since the target gets to fire at full effect in Defensive Fire. Pinned units fire with greatly reduced effect in defensive fire, making it much more likely for your assault to strike home.

Unlike GW, assaults are resolved completely within one turn, and they're very bloody.

I really like the game, and can't wait for the early-war stuff.

I was going to do a French force for Early War but decided to expand my Brits instead with a Matilda tank company; then I can use them in EW and MW-Afrika.

Never picked up the rules but I'd have to use my 10mm stuff if I did. Can't afford another scale for WWII when I play it so infrequently.

Taking the thread back on track; I managed to undercoat my halftracks yesterday so hopefully I'll start painting them this week!

Wanted to start painting my infantry but I need to buy meself some plastic cutlery first...
