We played game 1 of the Anzio campaign using the Dogs & Devils book. 3K points per side with 2 German players with HG Panzergrenadiers and a
Afrikalung-thing-a-job Recce versus me with US 3rd ID Infantry Company. Mission was randomly determined to be Strategic Withdrawal.
Campaign game #1 takes place at "The Factory". Germans conceded defeat at the end of Turn 3, no longer being mission capable to obtain the objectives. But failing a company morale check in Turn 4 sealed their loss. Major US victory with no platoon destroyed or under 50% strength; only one platoon (MG/mortars weapon platoon) withdrew but were full strength.
On to Rome!
US left flank at start of game:
US right flank:
Veteran infantry dug-in and gone to ground protecting one of the objectives; these guys never got routed out of their holes.
Opposing Recce trading shots:
MG teams, rifle platoon, and Sherman tank platoon deny the right flank to the Axis:
Despite being on the defense and supposed to be withdrawing, one platoon of infantry went on the offense and assaulted German recce armored units before charging across the river to pursue the German Pak40 AT gun teams:
As the right flank starts to wear thin on armor, another platoon of Shermans held in ambush reveal themselves to support the flank and drive the Axis back:
