I own a 28mm samurai army which i have been using for playing WFB/WAB for some years now. I have always been interested in japanese history, specially the last days of the bakufu and the like. I remember once telling a friend of mine "You see the situation of Japan in the XIX century? You could do a lot of epic movies with this stuff!" and he answered me "no, the japanese already made them, it's a bad idea". Then "The last samurai" was aired, proving that my friend was "prophetic". Anyway, some time later i played a WFB game against the empire, and the army was almost totally comprised of arquebusiers and cannons (including gatl... i mean, hellblasters). It was really epic. In the end i won, but i was a very narrow victory. Since then i have been thinking:
-Is there any rules which i could use to represent this kind of battles?
-Could the WAB be modified to use it that way?
-And, (craziest of it al), is any manufacturer producing 28mm miniatures for the early XIX century imperial army?

Any ideas will be warmly welcome

I liked the Last Samurai very much more as I expected. Good.

But I do not know any answers to your questions...

Perry Miniatures produce a range of Samurai, including some with Aquebus (sp?). I believe that Foundry do Japanese troops as well, but I dont know what era.

I have this dream of re-playing the Japanese invasion of Korea.. another future project.

Warhammer Ancients is a modified warmaster so it is meant for large epci battles. ?You can adopt your 28mm fis for it I know people have

As for your Imperial troops I would look at either Boxer Rebellion lines or Russo-Japanse war

Here is Some Japanese Marines from Redout

Please, no more samurai references. I have a big samurai army at home, made up of dixon (very few, fortunately), old glory and even citadel miniatures (the nippon rocket launcher crew!). The things i really need are some 28mm imperial army miniatures AND any ideas about how to modify the WAB rules to fit (or were to get a better suiting ruleset).

Cuban Comissar, maybe i should try Old Glory... maybe they have some infantry from that age (i think the marines look too different from the infantrymen... which raminds me... where can i see a drawing of the japanese uniforms of that age?)

Now, i'm really impressed... how can 3-400 guys armed with swords kill 15000 men????? It's more than 30 kills for each combatant!

I have seen old glory boxer rebellion japanese and i don't really like them (they are skirmishing, while i would like to form traditional firing lines and the like). Maybe i should try to buy, convert and cast those Redout soldiers? (casting is legal in my country as long as you don't try to sell the miniatures) Anyway, it will really depend on the scale of the models (mine are rated as 25mm but they are on-par with WHFB scale, so they are really 28mm).

Does warhammer ancients have rules for XIX century armies?

If your looking to convert figures I would look at French Franco-Prussian war figures.  They have the kepi that looks like above.

For WAB rulke tweak I would look at the English civil war rules suppliment and turn up the power of the guns way up.

Thank you Cuban Comissar, but this miniatures lool like real 25mm instead of the "larger" 25mm (28mm, like WH and Old Glory). Again, maybe i should ask?

The bad think about converting those french guys would be their faces... too much trouble to make them look oriental, i think (although i could try, but later, muuuuch later)
