Vanvlak, it would be tricky to use 'real' models, as one of the big aspects of the game is that the number of masts represents your number of cannons (4 masts=4 cannons), and as you take hits you remove the masts (they pull out quite easily), and lose cannons. Very simple and elegant. To use real figs you would really need a ship record sheet to mark the masts off as they take damage. If you were doing that you might be better with 'proper' rules, but it could be worth a try for quick games.

Thanks Reaversbane - oww, I couldn't pull masts off completed models! I guess I'd have to use Man o'war style templates for damage...
cheers,
John  :D

Indeed, both could be done. Other minis for Pirates or the cardboard models from Pirates with other rules.

As for the realism? I think they did it nice, some historical aspects but also lots of fantasy. Ghost Crew and such. Pirates of the Caribbean (the movie) was a boost for them, next two movies will also impact the game I guess.

:O I hadnt looked at it that way :D That would be a bad idea, yeah...

To be honest, Im considering doing ship templates anyway to give some of my players, as young children snap the masts quite easily when removing them (some old children do too to be honest :;): ).

We played PoTSM a lot when they first came out. In typical legion club style the games rapidly became "sod the treasure, lets just blast the opponents to smithereens". We had some great multi-player games featuring 4 or even 6 players.

But as usual Wizkids have killed our interest by releasing too many expansions. Counting the initial release there have been 5 separate expansions since July 2004. The first couple we bought loads of- I had a complete French fleet and a nearly complete Pirate fleet.

But by the last couple of expansions we have lost interest- due to stat inflation you need many of the newest expansions to have the best combos of ships/crew.

It was great when it was just a good fun pick up game. Now the game has become all about who has the most choice of ships/crew and who knows the killer combos it is not so fun. I won't be buyng anymore but will keep my existing ships - no doubt after Pirates of the Carribean II/III come out we will feel compelled to have a few weeks of Pirates mayhem.

Cheers

James

Hmm, why not play as sealed tournaments? 3 Boosters only opened at the day of the game.

There is a bit of 'killer combo ness' in Pirates, but its not too bad. There is a lot of meta-game involved which mitigates the killer combos quite a bit. If you have a super treasure gathering fleet, but come up against someone with a decent combat fleet you can be buggered, mainly if you lose the roll to pick islands, and vice versa.

It isnt perfect, no, but trying different scenarios and stuff can help.

The other alternative is get the players who always win to become Wizkids Envoys, which means you cant really compete competitively anymore, thats what we did :p

And sealed is also a really good solution, and one thats quite easy to do casually.

Part of the stat inflation problem was the continuing timeline.  Warships simply became better from the 1600s through the American Revolution/War of 1812, and into the Barbary Coast.

Yep, you're right. Including the Americans into Pirates is quite a downfall to me.
But that's easy to avoid, just don't buy boosters, at least when your playing with friends thinking the same.

Pirates of the Spanish Main should only include English, Spanish, French and Dutch (failure by Wizkids not having them!). Ofcourse Pirates & Buccaneers everywhere.

If you go to the Wizkids forums you'll find Norvegian Combo's as they are called. Within 2 turns the game is done... that sucks!

Hi Guys,

"Pirates of the Spanish Main" is a great game. The only thing that has kept me out of it is that I didn't want to pick up yet one more hobby area. I'm a little like Primarch in that I try to keep my money concentrated on an area of interest.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Played my first three real games yesterday with the 'simpler' European rules. Really fun time!

The other player had 50 ships or so to choose from, I had 10. But I won 2-1 in the end thanks to my Spanish Armada!

This game fun>tactics (but don't neglect them).

Hi!

I just can get into any of these collectable games. I demand the right to buy exactly what I want froma game and in the quantities I want. Buying a starter or booster to wait and see what I get would not make me too happy.

Too bad some of these games seem quite fun, but the collectable aspect kills it for me.

Not knowing what you get isn't that much of an issue in my opinion. The unknowing adds a bit of 'ooooh, what do I get now?' to the game.  :D

You can always search ebay or alike for cards to buy directly if you want to now what to get.

Hi!

My sentiments exactly.

They're is a feeling of "oh what I get", but I'd bet that feeling turns to fustration after a pack of two of the "same stuff"....
