Quote (Tas @ 17 Dec. 2005 (05:21)) | Inrteresting that the RN Squadron's strength was its gunnery - a historically factual thing as the RN spent more money on gunnery training than anyone else in the period. | In contrast with 1812? According to - aaargh, wossname, can't even remember where I put the bok - anyway, the British restricted powder expenditure for training, and American gunnery proved superior in most encounters. is this correct Tas? And is the civil war period improvement a consequence?

Yes that is correct. in the early napoleonic period they did lots of trianing, cut it back when they were obviously better than the French, got cleaned up by the Yanks in 1812 and reinstituted their training budget again

Thanks chief. Still can't find the book, it was a historical text on the naval war of 1812 by wossname, the author of the Hornblower novels.

Tas [Inrteresting that the RN Squsron's strength was its gunnery - a historically factual thing as the RN spent more money on gunnery training than anyone else in the period.]
The rules I was using in this scenario didn't give the RN any special gunnery advantages and in this game I was being a bit of a bully committing RN warships against US converted merchantmen and small craft.
However as you say the RN did have a special gunnery school by this time (HMS Excellent set up by Phillip Broke the guy who dismantled the USS Chesapeake in 1813...i think??) and they would have had gunners with war experience from the naval bombardments in the Crimea and the China, so may be I should reflect this with a rules mod.
Then again I've been reading that the RN's brand new 110pdr Armstrong Breech loaders had to be withdrawn after the bombardment of Kagoshima in 1863 because they kept malfunctioning so that will need to be reflected too!
