Me and a friend is looking into the possibility of Silmarillion with10mm miniatures. Silmarillion would play out more like historical warfare than Warmaster (no magic, but still monsters). We are looking through rulesets and I wonder if anyoone knows of any decent ones. So far, we have looked into Warmaster and DBA.

Has a great rep. Might want to put some feelers out on the SG forums. They've got a really active board over there.

But finding the rules in print will be expensive. It is discontinued. If you can find easy access to the rules in another way (perhaps a freind has some?), I highly reccomend them.

Warmaster Ancients is indeed out of print.

But you can try my rules for free, the Die is Cast

10mm, 6mm, 28mm, 15mm.... whatever scale you like.

Some battle reports so you can see what they look like in action

Warmaster is a great game, and has the 'heroic' feel that you are probably looking for in a LotR army game. However, bear in mind that most Ancient games are actually scale-independant. Effectively, the size of the base represents the area of land that the unit takes up, and the minis on the base are just to tell you what they are. That means that it is theoretically possible to have one side using 3 28mm minis on a base, and the other using 75 6mm minis, and as long as the bases are the same size and weapon/movement rates are agreed on, it works fine. The upshot of this is that Ancient rules sets are more open, and the 'scale' that they are aimed at is often secondary to what you are looking for in the game mechanics.

Also, although Warmaster Ancients is out of print, the original Warmaster rules are still available for free download (if you can work out the links) on the GW site, and you can just remove all references to magic and go with them.

The Warmaster Ancients rules and army lists are out there on the internet if you look (they are a but hard to find though). I checked a few month back. Just for interest as I already have the rules and lists. There is also a Yahoo group which do sterling work keeping the system going.

I like Warmaster Ancients

Battle of Five Armies is very, very similar to Warmaster but somewhat distinct (the magic options are a little different, and there are some other differences which escape me ATM).

Thanks for all the responses. We are settling for Warmaster Ancients, which took the better part of an evening to find, with rules for flying from Warmaster. No generic magic, but we are thinking of scenario-specific Commander abilities.
