So I've found somebody I can play games regularly with. He's mostly into historicals though I think I'm getting him hooked on sci-fi. Anyway, he has historicals in 10, 15, and 28mm. I've been thinking about getting into historicals for some time now but haven't due to lack of opponents. So the question is what are the pro's and cons of WAB with 28s or 15's and WMA with 10mm figs? I'm looking for input both on the rules and figures. |

I cant answer your question directly. However, I can ask what period your are interested in. Given the choice, I would personally go for WMA. But, there is also the decision of whether you prefer an element based game, or an individual based game. WMA has the benefit of essentially being Warmaster second edition, and had the playtesting and experience of Warmaster when it was produced. I am mostly interested in Ancient periods, and therefore that means large blocks of troops and element basing makes more sense. |

Given that you're asking the question on an Epic list and not a 40K list, I'd suggest WMA... I really does come down to whether you want to play proper battles or smaller skirmishes. WMA does proper battles really well. WAB does smaller battles okay-ish, but doesn't really set the world alight. If you've a big enough table, then it can be fun manouvering to set up favourable fights, but in general, like WFB, most battles are won and lost during deployment. I prefer WMA - better game, better looks, and much cheaper - only two books, and Pendraken will do you 1000 point armies for 30 to 40 quid. Oh, and the Unique Selling Point - ask a question on the WMA Yahoo group, and chances are it'll be answered by Rick Priestley. You can't get better support than that! Regards, Reaver |

I'm interested in ancient Greeks, either Spartans or Athenians, and Late Imperial Rome period barbarians. He seems to lean towards 28's, where my interest is in smaller scales, but he's willing and able to play in any of the three mentioned scales. The main reason I'm hesitant about 28s is cost. |

Take a look at Baccus' 6mm range, and you'll convert. I've managed to buy 1000 points of Ancient Germans in 6mm for less than the cost of a couple of hundred points of 28mm ones. |

It's not a matter of me converting, it's what is he willing to play. I'd gladly do 6mm. He's already got painted forces in everything but 6mm. |

maybe go for 10mm WMA as your opponent already has 10mm, WMA is a really great game. ?I dont know much about WH ancients but the price alone of a 28mm army has put me off trying it. Better still try and convert him to 6mm, ?as Vanvlak pointed out you can get an army very cheap from Baccus and you can also buy by the unit, with the added bonus of being able to paint them up very quickly. cheers |

I've played WMA 10mm v 6mm and its doesn't look to bad. As long as the bases are consistant its fine. WMA can suffer from the warmaster problem were really good rolls can produce some extreme manouvers but not as much as normal warmaster due to some minor tweaks. Recently been mad enough to get some Romans for WAB too and I'm told it creates a good feel for what we like to think an ancient battle would be like! So in summary, do both, you know you want too!!! |

See, now Fields of Glory (the Osprey game being released soon) is going to go and confuse things even more. According to bit I saw on Tabletop Gaming News during my lunch break there will be some 28mm plastic multipart Romans and Celts available as starter sets (not prepainted). |

I wouldn't be surprised if FOG killed off both WAB and WMA. Try to make sure your basing is useable for more than just WAB/WMA, or at least not so firmly done that you cannot change it at some point in the future. FOG uses DBx basing, but is also reasonably flexible I believe. |

So I played a game of WAB yesterday (I played a barbarians against his late Imperial Romans) and found it enjoyable. Having played 40k before the mechanics weren't totally unfamiliar. I might pester him to play Warmaster next week to see how I like it. |
