In the new Warmaster ancient armies book you now have the option of basing your phalanx on the long edge rather than the short 'shock' edge.
The rules indicate that you get the same number of attacks in this formation as you would in the shock formation. But i've added the attacks in the way described and it always comes out at 8 attack for the long side and 9 attacks for the shock side. how is that equal? anyone else try the maths and explain how 8 = 9....?

I don't have the book in front of me, but the basic idea is that when you base them facing the short side you generate more attacks per length of side. By doing that you can now make more of your stands (from several different units) make contact with enemy stands (within the same unit/s) than you could normally, allowing you to generate more attacks per length of contact frontage.
So if you have, for example, a 4 attack phalanx stand based to have a short side be the front you can then have it so that more of your phalanx stands attack a single (or unit) of normally mounted/faced stands. If your enemy had his three stands in a unit arrayed line abreast and you attacked him with 2 normally based units line abreast then the best you could do would be to have 5 units making contact: 3 meeting on the front edges and 2 meeting corner to corner.
With Phalanx units mounted to face the short side you could get 10 stands to attack his one unit: 8 meeting on the front edges and 2 making corner to corner contact.
I think as a bit of a compensating factor they reduced the base number of attacks by 1 so that phalangites wouldn't be too much.
