Following on from a discussion about just how good GW Warhammer Fantasy Battles is, in this thread, I have come to the conclusion that it is best to knock together my own rules set, as inspired by various other rule books and a few of my own ideas.

So, I will be using this thread to ask any development questions, and then put the resulting rules here for download and feedback.

My first question is about measurement. Do players prefer using inches or centimeters? Centimeters seem a more popular option and more games are moving towards this. However, inches seem to capture the 'olde worlde' feel and more of the older and established games use them.

So, what would you guys like to see in a rules set?

Not that I play any fantasy games, but in general, I like the idea of using cm.  It allows for some subtle differences in unit movement rates that wouldn't be possible with inches.

I prefer inches, but it's no big deal for me to convert to metric. I know that 2" = about 5cms and besides how often are firing ranges and movement rates not given in 5 cms increments?

Inches work better at 28mm scale, IMHO.

Imperial system is the spawn of the devil. There's a reason the world uses metric... :p

That settles it, I will measure everything in thumb lengths! Smaller players will shoot shorter distances and move less.  :p

Things seem fairly evenly split between the two systems. I will use cm simply because they are easier to adjust and the calculation into inches is easier.

Thanks.

Metric is the spawn of Napoleon, he was just as scary for the rest of us Europeons.

Thumbs up!  :D

Anyway, cm should be the choice, my measurement devices are made for cm's.

Maybe, but at least he had the sense of using multiples of 10 :p

Hey - there was nothing impractical about the pre decimalised UK currency system :D

Ah, the classic solution and the main reason we have so many rulesets to choose from.  :;):

I'm looking forward at seeing what you come up with. And I prefer cm.

I'm also curious after what you can come up with.

Myself, I've been trying to write a decent massed-combat game for years, and through dozens of tries, I think now I'm out of ideas to improve on my work.
My main handicap in this is playtesting. I'm quite isolated as a wargamer here, and so 90% of my writings are based solely on the theory that it might work...

But I'm ranting here. I think my point here is that a playtesting group is a definite must.

About the measurements I like to see in a fantasy setting, I think I'd prefer inches. It gives, like you call it, and 'ye olde world' feeling, which I like.

I must admit that this is taking a little longer than I first thought - mainly because I want to make sure that there are as few holes in the first draft as possible.

This, coupled with the fact that I am moving home next week, the car needs some serious work and the fact that the new year and term are gathering momentum, means that it may be a couple of weeks before this surfaces.

The first draft will deal only with basic units of troops - no heroes, champions, psychology or magic at this point. I want to get the core mechanics down properly, as the game will concentrate on the movement and application of units (I hope!).
