So I've tried Warmaster out recently, after a couple of games I can safely say I love it! busy building up a dwarf army for it, and have plans for bretonnians and chaos forces too

but I wonder if anyone has any other rulesets (preferably free) they can recommend? I hear good things about Hordes Of The Things, and many of the guys on the pendraken forum use it, it seems to be much smaller scale than warmaster however

if anyone has any info, or can point me at any info that would be great, I'm looking for a side by side comparison ideally, but anything is useful!

Warmaster Ancients adds a few refinements that, IIRC, make it an even better game. I cannot, unfortunately, remember what they ARE...

EDIT: Wikipedia discusses them somewhat, and a Warseer thread tells me that it makes the game more historical but less cinematic.

Make of that what you will.

HotT is a fantasy derivative of the DBx system, and is pretty generic. For some people, that's an advantage. Its not necessarily small scale, but the figures on the bases only tell you what the unit is, they don't necessarily represent 1-to-1 or even many-to-1 the number of figures in the unit. Each army has a set of 'infantry', 'cavalry', etc troop type and you basically make your own mini to represent this troop type. Personally, I find it too loose for my style of gaming.

Mayhem by Bombshell Games is a really good one. You can find my batrep in this section of the forum. It plays nicely and is "design your own".
