Just wondering if any of you play warmaster as it is game with small sized miniatures. I myself have 2 armies painted (high elf and undead) with a bretonian in the works.

Also, what is the leading forum for warmaster? I want to take a peek at it.

Yes, I play -- to the extent I can grab time.

Try the Specialist Games heading at the top of the Taccoms webpage to get to sg.tacticalwargames.net: more WM discussion there.

We played just the other week (4000 points). I found it to be a very tactical game and I like it.

Here are the links that I had in my bookmarks:

Haven't played it yet, but I own a few troops of high elves and a somewhat larger bunch of undead. Still need a few more to get to 1000 points to try it out in the future. The rules seem pretty strategic and the battle reports I read were quite entertaining.

Played a couple of games, played much more Ancients and Blitzkrieg Commander (a WWII game based on the warmaster activation system).

Having said that I think for ancients I'll be playing mainly FOG now.

I'm trying to resist the temptation of getting into Warmaster. Unlike Epic, only one army tempts me. I'm sure you can all guess which army that might be.  :;):

I dont play or collect Warmaster. But like yourslef I was half tempted by the Dwarves. I loved the rules they came up with for Dwarven Slayers- very thematic.

I have Warmaster and Warmaster Ancients.  I'm more interested in the Ancients but I have yet to play a game of either.

It's a favorite of mine.  I've got all of the basic armies as well as Lizards.

Warmaster no. Warmaster ancient yes. Also cold war commander which is based on warmaster.

Why not warmaster but the other two? Simple. They fix my biggest bugbears of warmaster. Warmaster ancient in particular got rid of the goddamn broken cavalry supplemented by terror causing hero combination   . Something HAS to be wrong if _I_ can crush opponents without much of an effort with half the army(infantry) sitting ducks with both players(me and opponent) trying to figure out how to beat the high elves. Heck 50% more points to opponent and I still the elves ran over them though atleast infantry got some job to do. Delaying so that the cavalry has time to walk over enough units to break the army. I'm hardly tactical genius and usually I lose rather than win regardless of game so if I now beat opponent without problems like that then I won't buy assurances that game balance isn't broken.

Sorry but 4+ armour saves, narrow frontages, free availability, relatively cheap prices and terror causing monsters are together just too good. I had break of about 2 year from warmaster and then I pulled it again as another person wanted to try it. I pulled out high elves and despite infantry never moving at all I ran over his army again. Stupid cavalry.

Warmaster ancient meanwhile has fixed as there the cavalry is pricier compared to infantry or doesn't have 4+ save or doesn't have narrow frontage and most definetely don't run around with pet dragon and are in limited numbers to boot. And when most of the conditions for broken are met(4+ save, narrow frontage and IIRC wide availability) atleast they suffer additional command penalty for second order making uber charges from out of nowhere riskier bussiness(especially without command 10 of high elves to lead them).

Myself I utterly hate warmaster fantasy but absolutely love warmaster ancient and I have smallish roman army for it which I hope to build to bigger later(from 6mm models though. I HATE painting 10mm troops. Go figure. Anyway I use 6mm so that ranked infantry has 72 infantry models crammed into 3 stands. Now THAT'S lots of troops! Pictures: Romans

Overall I have therefore very mixed feelings regarding the game system. Pretty weird how same core rules can cause such extreme polarisation of emotions! I guess warmaster fantasy COULD be good if they incorporated improvements from warmaster ancient mainly in the area of cavalry.

broken cavalry

Warmaster was designed specifically with "broken cavalry" in mind. In the warhammer fantasy lore cavalry rules the battlefield. I remeber reading an article/thread where Rick Priestly was talking about it, back when Warmaster first came out.

So looks like ancients is for you then.

Good game that does not make though. It was hardly fun I could walk over my opponents with half my army without any effort with tactics that could be summed up with one word: CHAAAAAAARGE! No subtle tactics, no fancy manouvering, just head toward his biggest and meanest block and run over them. 4 chaos knights? Ran 'em over! 12 infantry units in 3 brigades over the hill? Just crush them. Crunch-crunch-crunch-crunch. Everything fell beneath the lances of silver helms and jaws of dragon. Over and over and over and over again.

That...was...NOT fun! After about ~10 games games were played just so we could figure is there ANYTHING we could figure out to tackle them. In the end we came up with: nope. Even with just charging around nothing worked. And even enemy having cavalry didn't help much because high elves were just so goddamit good. 4+ cavalry, big bad dragon, reliable magic and high command values=I ran over brigade after brigade of boar boyz, empire knights, bretonnian armies and whatnot.

Only chaos knight led armies were any challenge whatsoever(as that cavalry is just rock HARD!) and there elf infantry(or rather archers and RBT's) were of use to delay and confuse chaos army since there I actually needed to get them in tricky situation(Front and rear at the same time so even win by 1 and they are poof).

But ancient now. Drool! Disclipined ranks of Roman Legions bracing themselves as hordes upon hordes of wild celts crash upon them. High skilled infantry(these could have given even high elves run for their money!) vs positively scary amount of infantry. Just great!
