Just a general question; what ruleset would you use with 6mm fantasy figures. I'm just thinking since Baccus has some really nice 6mm fantasy figs and recently someone (Reaver?) posted pics of a new 6mm line.  :;):

I have the rules to Horde of the Things yet have never played it.

Supposed to be a fantasy version of DBM I think.

Simplistic army lists from what I remember. I may now have to find that book again.

It could be played in any size....

What about Warmaster?  Warmaster Ancients works really well in 6mm, so I would imagine so would the fantasy version.

HotT and WM would be the two obvious choices today.

Major benefit of HotT is when playing it within a campaign. That way there's yet another way to balance diplomacy, economy and warfare.

I've played a couple of games while participating in playtesting Fantasy Rules TCE (a very cut-down and better edited version of the older bloated version 3 rules).  It gives a more fantasy & fun feel to magic then HoTT seems to; plays with the same individual elements in small numbers, on a 3'x4' board, but allows them to get demoralised instead of just pushed back in mild defeats.  Nice and fast game, but I need more games to judge the balance.  Also suffers a bit for being a based on the older rules, but that should mean that the balance is pretty good.  Get an idea of the mechanics from FR Annex(based on FRv2 but basics are almost the same).

Main trouble with Warmaster is that the standard armies probably won't fit the available 6mm models.  Also I thought the heavy cavalry were far too good for their points.

I read that HoTT has some short but too condensed (hard to make sense of) rules, which also put me off.

HOTT is more condenses, yes. But to the point of being either unreadable or unplayable, no.

FR!TCE seem a must to try out.
I got loads of 15mm fantasy...  :sigh:

Yup, I'm releasing the new 6mm fantasy line, Reaver is sculpting them for me.

Mighty Armies is a pretty good ruleset, when the new edition is released it will include unit design rules and additional unit traits.

I think the guy that runs Splintered Light Minis also intends on releasing a ruleset called Pride of Lions that could be used, even though its designed for 15mm.

I was even thinking of being crazy and using Armies of Arcana, just on a really small scale.

The Fantasy Ork line looks like it would fit Warmaster pretty well.  You can also use the Warmaster Ancients rule modifications with Warmaster lists and Magic/items to tone down the uberness of Heavy Cav/Chariots too.

Kallistra has a free PDF rule set called "Hordes & Heroes" on their website.  It seems to combine elements of HOTT and WM.  It's certainly more readible than HOTT, including illustrations and whatnot, has a simple magic system centered around summoning elementals, and includes a number of basic army lists for the more common fantasy races.

Plenty of work going on to change WM to WMA. Have a look at the yahoo groups for both.

The best fix is to only allow combat to go 2 rounds. This stops the shock cavalry rolling up your line in one turn.
