Warmaster is a great game... My major complaint is that the 3-stands/unit gets a little fiddly -- tremendous amount of verbiage, and a good amount of head-scratching in game goes to figuring out how to arrange units against each other after a charge.

I'd always thought formation rules and formation changes were a bit fiddly, but Warmaster is a good example of the alternative... and it's not all that pretty.

Command rules are very solid, though -- and an excellent game.

It would be tempting to move the game to a more interactive igougoigougo format, per the above, or even to move to a activation/trump system such as in the GMT Great Battles of History system.

Can't remember where, but I'm sure one variant talks about alternating commands between the sides. So side A uses one commander then passes to side B when they either fail or don't want to try for more orders. Might be in Blitzkrieg Commander.

All those varients use that system, Blitzkreig, Cold War and future War Commanders. In my opinion a solid set of rules. Apart from testing with self I haven't actually played any but hoping to give BKC a go in as short a time as possible.
