Post subject:  Tactical or non-tactical paintschemes?
Do you prefer to paint 6mm sci-fi forces in tactical or non-tactical colors?  Why?  I have painted several armies over the years, and use both.  I find that my choice tends to depend on how I imagine the culture of the combatants.  For example,  a highly militaristic or pragamatic culture would have camoflaged vehicles and uniforms.  However, a fanatical religious group, or a nation with a history of chilvary / honor would tend towards the dramatic and bright colors, disregarding their own personal safety to uphold a tradition.

I prefer non-tactical colors, because the minis stand out better on the table.  However, I do understand why others like using chamo schemes since it's more "realistic".

Tactical with some splashes of colour ruining any camouflage value.

Like yourself, I'm split, generally colour for the SMs (these guys are scared of nobody  :laugh: ) and more tactical for the IG.

Well you guys know my stand on this ... based on my past and working knowledge of history ... Tac/Camo is the way to go ! ... I do see the points the "T" makes.  But, IMO, having no fear, honor, etc. does not mean you have to make yourself a easy target ! :;):  And I know about advanced sensors, etc., but still this is no reason to decrease your possiblility of survival !  No matter how tough, skilled, etc. a unit is; it has to survive to be combat effective. And I feel the usefulness of fananatic suicidal troops are limited ... But again, DWWFY ! :D

I prefer tactical colors, but it the fluff for a games says faction x uses bright eye-destroying color I'll paint it in bright eye destroying colors. ?Though sometimes if I'm looking for a quickie paintjob (like the CH tanks I did a while back) I'll do a "parade" color scheme. ?I like to think of it as a dress uniform for equipment.  If you look in my photobucket galleries you'll see I do a bit of both.

A semi-realistically painted warlord titan... it'd be camoflaged great in a rural environment... but it's in a city! :D

I think the deal with Space Marines is that their very presence is meant to be demoralising. They hit hard, kill lots and make there presence known so the enemy routes. Now this makes sense. But wouldn't you wear camo if you were fighting Tyranids or Necrons where shock tactics don't work?

Very nice E&C ! Good Tac/camo colors ! :D And as far as fighting 'Nids & Necrons ... I'd wear camos ... and carry a big heavy weapon ! :laugh:

I personally wouldn't wear camo, I prefere to wear a small bunker made out of 12 foot plasteel.

The question with Tyranids and other Xenos: camo? or "deodorant?" ?

e.g. ?Camo isn't much use against bats... or dolphins.

In the end, the question: is it more important to be able to see where the friendlies are, or to try to conceal yourself from the enemies...?

I assume SM don't smell hugely in their airtight suits, but maybe they have so much testosterone that even plate airmour can't hide it.

Yech! Or imagine the smell inside a suit of Power Armour after a couple of centuries of use... Bloody hard to fit those shoulder pads in your washing machine you know.
Also I reckon it'd be pretty embarassing to any marine who has shrunk his armour because he washed it at too high temperature....although it explains the smaller 6mm SM1 era beakie marines diminuative size :D :p

They get demoted to Scouts, and aren't given a change of armour.

Mind you, the smell of a Plague Marine who's been around for a few millennia must be beyond any scale of smell.  :confuse:
