Word on the Reaper forum is that CAV2 is finally being released... tomorrow. Releases will be:

PDF Version
Starter set with a CD
Hardback full colour book (March)
Softback black and white book (April)

They mentioned that the CD will be available to buy seperately, and the hard back book will be only available to customers who pre-order it.

So, anyone interested in the game, now is the time to check it out.

Wow!  I guess we can't give them grief anymore.   :D

Was it worth the wait?

I must admit that there was not much that Reaper could do to actually put me off the game. But, I am happy with the beta rules that were released a short time ago. I will probably make an advance order for the hardback book. I was going to get the PDF download as well, but there is now no discount for doing so, so I will need to see how much it is (although initial estimates put it very cheap, at about 10 dollars).

The rules seem pretty good, and expandable (just add more special abilities).

I'll say that they're definitely a long time coming.  I first got interested in CAV right about the time they announced it would updated to their RAGE ruleset.  If it weren't for the fact that I love the minis and the betas versions were quite addictive I wouldn't have stuck around waiting for 2 years to release the final version of the new rules.  The other reason I stuck out the long wait was that their customer service and the online community they've fostered goes a long way to endear people to the company.  CAV is really the game I wanted Battletech to be.

Now all that gushing fanboyism aside, there really was no good excuse for all the missed release targets.  My personal thought is that they as a company try to have their people multitasked in too many directions filling as many jobs as possible, in short there wasn't an individual who's sole job was the creation of the rules until the latest drop-dead date when the owner stepped in and provided some much needed prodding in the posterior.  The only thing I wonder is why he didn't do that earlier instead of letting the process drag out until all but the most devoted had written the game off to the annals of history.

Further development for game materials are going to be fan driven and approved by Reaper.  Current guesses are that it'll be something akin to the d20 OGL.  I've been dreaming up some stuff to submit to them as additional material, mostly things like scenarios and such to get out of the whole "kill all till they're dead" type games.

It's a fun fast deadly game.  If you're interested in playing a demo or two you can check here to find the nearest member of their demo team (Black Lightning).  (no I don't get kick backs from them, just really like the game)

I just popped back over to the Reaper forums and the US$9.99 price has been confirmed.

I got into the rules about 18 months ago, when a few questions here pointed me towards it. I knew that I didnt like Battletech, or Heavy Gear, and wanted an alternative. I like CAV because of the design of the minis, and harder sci fi edge that it has, along with 'proper' military ideas (or at least an acknowledgement of them) - combined arms, section composition, battlefield roles, electronic warfare, etc.

I cant really say that I have 'stuck' with CAV. I made a single order of about nine CAVs and they have sat in a box until the new rules were released. I did pick up the previous rules and JoR on eBay, and they are very nice books.

I think that the thing that irritates me the most is the total disregard for any kind of deadline. It became almost comical that a deadline would be set, would pass by unannounced and the forum would be alight with questions. Then, wash and repeat!

I am a little worried about the future development of the game, and frankly I dont see it working. I am pretty much made up that I am buying into a dead game in terms of rules development. But, as long as the minis continue to be available, then that is fine with me.

I am sure that the good Sergeant and I can put together a synposis/review (as unbiased as possible!) if anyone is interested.

Good. I'm tempted but I'd like to know more.

Well, I would... but my Terran Mercs will be looking splendid in red!  :confuse:  I dont think that HE would approve.  :;):

v - I have had the same problem. I have posted on the forum but I cant find out where to order either. I can only guess that the US has not arrived for work yet!

At 10 dollars (confirmed), I will get the PDF as well and tap out a quick review.

The PDF rule book is now available from www.reapermini.com (I really should be getting commission for this!).

Got mine last night.  Still have a lot of reading to do.  It weighs in at 134 pages including front and back covers and roughly half of it is fluff.  So far about the only negative I've found are some minor spelling errors.

Probably, as at least I think I'll be getting it. At $10, with no postage or VAT, it's not like it feels much in my personal bankruptcy...

That's what I thought when I bought it. But now I must fight a strange urge to buy CAVS.... :p
