Hello everyone!

Just found a nice site with several space ship miniatures (http://www.ravenstarstudios.com/catalog.html), among them ships that resemble Klingons and Federation from Star Trek and Battlestars from Battlestar Galactica.

So I was wondering about game systems for space combat.

Do any of you play games like BFG (space combat with warships, escorts, ordnance etc.), or know of any such games?

cheers,
M

Full Thrust for me right now

I have played Star Fleet battles and this was alot of fun as well.

I have not played BFG, however, if you do not mind not having the vast mythos of 40K, then I would recommend you read rules from other manufacturers (example: the two mentioned above), as although many look similar, some have some really strong systems that really bring space battles to life.

Hope this helps

Cheers...

When I want to play starship combat I reach for Full Thrust.

There are several space games that are widely played...

Full Thrust - This is probably the most popular game out there. It is well supported and you are likely to find additional rules and stats for the models that you are looking to use.

Battlefleet Gothic - GWs space game with a strong following.

Other games include; Sky Full of Stars, Federation Commander, Babylon 5: A Call to Arms, Babylon 5 Wars (my second favourite along with BFG), Attack Vector: Tactical, Stamada, Space Dreadnought 3000, and several others.

In addition, there is a space game in development from Dark Realm Miniatures right now, still in its very initial stages, but written by some obscure chap called... CyberShadow...!  :p

Myself my favourite starship rules is A Call To Arms from Mongoose Publishing. Albeit there's 2 problems: a) it's Babylon 5 one rather than generic b) since Mongoose dropped B5 license as unprofitable it's OOP...

However there are hints of 3rd edition of ACTA which is non-B5 licensed(generic perhaps?) but when that comes is another thing.

But for me that's THE starship game. Enough grit to not feel too abstracted but not too detailed for games to take too long. Just right mix of grit and abstraction.

Full Thrust never did it for me. The presentation of the rules wasn't that great. I play Starmada:

http://mj12games.com/starmada/

The mechanics are simple: simultaneous pre-plotted movement, roll to hit, roll to penetrate shields, roll to damage, and all damage is simultaneous. The learning curve is fairly low because of them.

The best part about the game though is the huge ship customization options and the spread sheet that does all the hard work (math) for you. That and a $20 investment for the PDFs (core rulebook and rules annex) gets you the game.

They are working with ADB at the moment and have Klingon Armada in the pipeline. There's more info about that on their forums.

Warp Rift had an article on simultaneous movement and shooting for Battlefleet Gothic.

Ooooh - I used to love playing ACTA.

Full Thrust seems to be pretty much the generic "standard" rules set.

Simplified vector movement and a ship construction movement are both bonuses IMO.

Star Fleet Battles I have to say I'm biased against just due to the 1980s style complexity of the rules system. Unless you like consulting encyclopedia volumes of rules steer clear. It also suffers speed wise from larger fleets. Federation Commander supposedly fixes some of that but still not my cup of tea.

A decent system for larger fleet battles is the old Agents of Gaming Turning Point system which is a generic spin off of their B5 Fleet Action game. It also includes a construction system which is a bonus IMO although it does suffer from a tiny bit of the same chunkiness of the rules set as SFB.

It... as implied by the name... is designed for larger fleets than most games and uses smaller scale miniatures but I've never had any issues playing with BFG / Full Thrust sized ones on the table.

Attack Vector: Tactical is also fun but uses real world physics so it can be a bit difficult at times to follow the full rules set.

one more to add to the list, star blazers. it had all of the races from the cartoon and it is detailed enough to have big games but will not slow things down too much. my only complaint is that it is basically like every muniature game out there, be it spaceships or space marines. you line up on your side, i line up on mine and we meet in the middle, last one standing is the winner. i guess that's why i pretty much only play EA now, it's the only minis game that offers something different.

I play Full Thrust to get my space combat fix.
At the moment it is probably my favourite game out of everything I play... Much better than BFG and ACTA in my opinion...

I've got some of Ravenstar's BSG ships and I am really happy with them. The battlestars are around the same size as GZG Super Dreadnoughts or BFG Battleships. Nice and hefty while being great sculpts.

Wait a minute... I thought Turning Point died with AoG back in 2002. Or are they STILL selling the old stock?

I purchased the rules and liked (still like) the setting very much so I was really disappointed to see it go.  :heart-break:

Back on topic, the chaps at wargames unlimited have a set of generic starship combat rules at beta stage. I confess I haven't taken a look but as I like both No Limits and No Quarter I'm rather optimistic about them.
