I think WF's system makes sense - they're not just manufacturing product willy-nilly. Paying for production costs based on customer demand, instead of offering their personal "pet projects" for sale, may give them some longevity in the business.

Jings, are you kidding?  I've heard quite a few opinions from owners of small mini businesses, and just about all think WF's a bit nuts.  Also, the 'pet projects' of these guys don't always appear completely out of the blue - they ask their own questions or run their own polls (and otherwise take into account what might sell well), and post WIPs and finished pics; and they know from bitter experience that the amount of fanboy enthusiasm garnered by canvassing or sneak-peeks doesn't usually translate into sales.

Granted, WF might have some kind of leg-up with the fact that John Q. Public is directly stating what they want (just like people on mini-business forums all over), but where they fall down is that they have to get pledges of a thousand sales for each suggestion before they'll even design the things.  Firstly, I don't know if many gamers will agree to buy niche minis that don't even exist as a computer graphic.  Given the fickle nature of gamers (present company excluded), I can't see many retaining interest before the minis are eventually rendered.  And then how many will drift away when they don't like the design of the minis? (when they'll have as much input as with 'pet projects', IMO.  At the very least, voting with their wallets)  And then when they see the final, cast product?
Because from the sound of things, WF still isn't up to speed with the efficient conversion of computer renders into plastic.  A look at O-man's crab log should give you an idea of some of the difficulties and headaches involved there.

It might not bother gamers so much, with that $0 deposit, but it's going to kick Wargames Factory squarely in the nads if they produce these steel moulds and their market dissipates like mist.  Longevity is not the word I'd use.

I could provide links to (colourful) discussions if you think I'm blowing smoke. :;):

Fortune favours the bold, he who dares wins, and so on.  Or... I don't know any relevant Ferengi Rules of Acquisition ( :;): ), but I can quote a few human ones: throw 'em in and see if they float, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, look where you leap, etc. etc.

Mm-hm.  I particularly like this bit from one of those discussions I mentioned.

Well, in the end its just a big marketting research web page. Very usefull for us smaller companies who can turn around a range as fast as possible. Im urprised they even let us see the statistics. Its a really usefull page.

I might as well throw those links up.  Maksim might be able to tell you that these guys are hard to please, unforgiving, and... er... 'brusque'; particularly towards WF.  But bear in mind that among all the swearing and abuse, there's a bunch of pro sculptors and manufacturers with no small experience.

You quote Frothers as an objective source?  :vD  :vD  :vD

I'm sure you're going to get some very valid opinions and advice from people who are against WF because they have more experience in the industry or are pro sculptors - and maybe feel just a little threatened that someone using a computer instead of putty to sculpt, or have a larger vision than selling a hundred of a single figure, just might succeed where they haven't succeeded (or attempted to succeed).  :(

Mind you, I don't doubt their abilities (I own some of the work by a few of the regulars on FU!UK and think it's outstanding), I doubt their motives (and Steders is still a s***ing old c**t).

WF, so long as they put out decent 6mm stuff customers want when it reaches the required level of pre-orders, is doing something positive for Epic/6mm players by giving them another range from which to choose. I don't see how this is a bad thing - unless you have a chip on your shoulder from the outset.  :glare:

Just spent some time reading those threads. I must admit that through all the hot air and opinions that were stated as fact, I did find a few interesting ideas and opinions. But not mnay that is for sure. But in the end I found 95%+ of what I read to be just game geeks hot air and nothing more.

Amen to that ... But that being said ...  like kev mentioned ... I'm waiting for the "pudding" ! :D  I don't see what difference it makes to the "nay-sayers" if we get 6mm Andriods, Nuns with Guns, Grav tanks etc. !  Or not ?!    I'm still hoping for O/C to do 6mm Slammer AFVs ! :O

I'm not going to wait for that. They lost my business by that joke about the 6mm grav tank sprue.

The "picture" of the JBR Hovertank on a tabletop was just another mesh photoshopped onto a tabletop. Not that I care if they look anything close to this as a final product.

I have not given up hope 100%, but that little stunt did damge my trust in them. And unlike those who posted without names, I let them know it and signed my post.

It was a dumb stunt regardless.  :glare:

Daniel

PS: I love the fanboys who are saying those who dislike what was done are just hacking them. They posted it like ti was a picture and only fessed up once someone called them on it. Dumb Stunt and no amount of fanboy noise will change that IMO.

Weird. I just assumed it was a test render from the moment I saw it.

Fine, once I went back I could see it was not a real photo, but why put a render on a real photo of a table and not ID it as a reder then? Why spend the time in Photoshop doing the work?

The fact some saw it for what it was right away does not change the fact that the way it was presented was a dumb idea IMO.

Daniel

Eh, perhaps not the cleverest thing to do, but again, even if it is all vapourware and nothing comes of it, how are we disadvantaged?  There is no downside as far as I can see and I can't see where all the negativity comes from or what it hopes to achieve...except to sabotage what looks like a cool experiment.  I hope they crank out the stuff.  But again, if they don't, so what.
