Yeah, that's what I figure -but it's still "if" ... from what I can tell ... I think the "ape" term may refer to the suit and the Humie primate !

No, Heinlein was most certainly referring to the shape of the suits. :)  It is a colorful section of the book when they first get to try out the power armor and they reference it regularly afterwards.

Now what is this about a TV series?  Give me data please!  I had no idea there was ever a series even remotely connected to SST.  And forgive my ignorance on the subject but if Sony based their TV series on the book (which would presumably include the powersuits) and Mongoose based their stuff on the Sony stuff then why wouldn't they be able to make the suits?  Is there a piece of the puzzle I am missing?

And mini mushroom clouds would be an excellent model to have for the board (with a cloud about the size of an orbital barrage).

Yes, I remember now, it was the suit ! I got my copy from the FT. Benning Infantry School book store while attending the Infantry Officer Adv Course. Book was even recommended by the Infantryman's Journal.

That's news to me, too.

Now what is this about a TV series? ?

You'd be talking about this:

"Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles"

Yes, there was a CG TV series. WHich had its own visuals. Mind that Mongoose HAS done power-armor for their MI. But the power-armor does NOT match that seen in the book. They're closer to Space Marines with built-in jump packs and some awesome secondary weapons. They're also not called Marauder suits. The actual marauders are more like Dreadnought-ish piloted armor, with very very heavy weapons and tons of armor.

The closest thing to the book MI in the SST stuff are the Exosuits, which are huge terminator-style armor carrying heavy weapons which have crazy high movement speeds and are incredibly durable. Twelve of them plus 1 micro-nuke was worth about as much as a Brain Bug, a Tanker and something like 90 warrior bugs, plus some tunnel assets. The Marauders were even more expensive and even more powerful, but lost out on maneuverability compared to the exosuits.

In any case they don't have rights to the book-MI background and suchlike, though they have attempted to integrate it into their RPG and Miniatures stuff. And yes, there was a series made which followed the Roughnecks through the war, as I recall. Not sure if it's still being sold or not. The miniatures game also works in the movie MI in the form of the LAMI (Light Armored Mobile Infantry) which were huge regiments raised specifically for the Klendathu invasion, which exist still mostly because they were raised in such large numbers and hadn't been completely removed. The miniatures game was way cool, was written by Andy Chambers, but that's all beside the point, I suppose!

The TV series was produced under the title of Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles. And follows the Roughnecks from the Pluto Campaign through to the invasion of Klendathu then the fall-back to earth after the disaster at Klendathu Hive. It's pretty good, well animated, and reasonably written but I've not seen all of it so my opinion may not be completely accurate!

Ilushia is correct. The Mongoose game is based on the CGI TV series, not the film. The rule book has stills from the series in. The series is actually quite well received and liked, even by people that didnt like the film, although I have not seen it yet.

Well I put it on my wishlist on Amazon so hopefully somebody will pick it up for me by my birthday.  :)   From the looks of things though I'd say it is probably pretty close to the book and that'll be fine in my book.  We'll have to see!  Thanks for the HUMINT.

Don't think I ever saw anything about the "Forever War", in the Inf Journal, TRC ...  But regardless ... Infantryman will shows up !  Well I've heard about the TV show and have seen pics of the Mongoose 25mm.  I'd like to see them in 6mm - SSTs, Skinnies & Bugz. I'd like to see the series, maybe the SF channel should show it ! :alien:

I saw a couple of episodes of the series. They where okay. Personally I really like the movie. It is just an expensive B-movie. Just as it was intended to be.
I also only heard years later it was based on a book.

In the series I believed the special suits to be the daftest thing.....

I haven't seen the series but in the book the combat is pretty wild.  The gorilla suits aren't jump packed as much as they are jumpers.  Hydraulic legs on these things jump them into the air where they use the hang time to lay down the maximum amount of firepower possible vs. the bugs before hitting the ground. Many of the planets were low-G environments so the hang time could be substantial.  Since plasma fire was innacurate the biggest problem was close combat with the bugs.  Being in the air was the sure fire way to avoid close combat.  The book didn't go into the K-9 Corp too much, but they were described as ground based infantry with cyborg dogs that were semi-intelligent.  Apparently they didn't do so hot though against the bugs.

As I recall, the warrior bugs had pretty good cutting beams.

I'm fairly certain the books' suits had jump jets. The description of them free-falling with jet assist from something like 1KM up after their drop-pods had disintigrated around them was pretty vivid as I recall. As was Rico's run-down of the 'double tap' system in the heels to engage the jump systems. Plus even in low-G I have a hard time picturing someone being able to leap several kilometers in a single bound without dieing on impact with the ground! Never mind being able to fire rockets mid-leap without becoming disoriented without some kinda course correction system.

Otterman's right, the bugs definitely had high tech weapons and felt like a real threat to the MI in the intellect sector (At least with Brain Bugs) as well as the numbers sector. Still weren't as good as the MI, but good none the less.

Fun trivia: The movie didn't start out as an SST movie, it started out as a 'fight bugs in space' movie, and only later became SST when someone pointed out how similar their plotlines were.

Honestly, the pics of the minis for SST don't do them very good justice, as far as I've seen. Really the game is more like 30mm then 25mm, too. The Exosuits are freaking humongous, never mind the Marauders!

Forever War was a much grimmer novel...

Heinlein was an interesting character -- wiki has a good article on him.  Born in 1907, graduated USNA in '29, but missed both wars, and flirted with radicalism in the 1930s.

Haldeman was a Vietnam vet... Forever War's powered armor is a good deal less 'gee-whiz' nifty -- the detail I remember is that it was made to amputate and cauterize wounded appendages: I don't think it was a feature that the troopers inside particularly appreciated.  His premise is rather interesting -- the troops travel to their various destinations at near light-speed, with the effects that Einstein would predict.
