Looking at WWI tanks I realise that there's two worlds. One basically los-tech (like Epic/40k and BattleTech) and one con-tech (as in contemporary, as in it's own time).
These two can never be combined. It's a pitty, but my SAC of IC or Kra'Vak of DS2 may never meet my Imperial Guard of Epic. But Tau may be bridging, I think.

This random rambling even has a point. It show, atleast me, why I don't "like" IC, DS2 and FWC. They are quite simply not los-tech!

In BT they got weapons and systems easily capable of outstripping any of our own modern technology. But los-tech limit their use to some mere 300 meters.
And the same in Epic. Landraiders are literally thousands of years old.
There's a very special feel to these systems. And they are for sure as if made to standard tabletop size! Big rumbling tanks, big as city blocks shooting some 500 meters max; approximatly 48"!

"Gee, Erik is rambling again..."

Indeed I am. I wanted to find out what was the matter.
On one side Epic and BT, on the other Traveller, B5, IC, DS2 and FWC.

So, now it's of my chest, back to painting!

I think I am following your thought here. The tech and style of one game may not port well into amother game's tech levels and style. Eldar Grav-Tanks look fine fighting GZG Grav-tanks because they have simular tech. But the Heavy Gear power armor looks odd when used against Warzone's WWI looking Troopers.

So am I close?

I know what you mean Erik but it does not do well to look too closely at the glaring errors. They are there (I'm sure you know) because they were making a table top game. The mind boggles at the size of table that would have been required for a more realistic game. Worse yet for range is the BFG space combat that almost literally is fought at knife edge ranges that I am sure would realistically take place at ranges of hundreds if not thousands of miles distance.

Still and all, I like the relative closeness of it all. It means I can get my Tyranids in amongst all you soft fleshy snacks on legs!

dafrca ~ Something like that. Tech levels need to be "contemporary".

Warhead ~ I don't mind the shooting range as such. Hard to really be effective at over 300(?) meters anyhow, man-packed. And relative scale is something we always have to cope with.

I think it's the Emporium (40k universe) that getting to me. It's so utterly senseless.
I watched some DS9 where a Federation company held some sort of Founder comm-beacon. A bit Enigma class on it. Still only a company involved on either side.
Looking at Iron Cow 2103AD it's the same. An action is one "brigade" big (eg battalion).

Never mind. It's lovely models. Lets shake loose our brain-cells and go playing!

I think each system is written for a different feel, and the tech levels and whatnot are crafted to reflect that.  Some of these 40K weapons have ranges that a long bow could outstrip, while in Dirtside a HEL has a game-scale range of nearly twelve miles.  Even the ponderous DFFG has a range that far exceeds anything in 40K -- even artillery!

40K, in my mind, has always been "Warhammer Fantasy Battles in Space".  Sadly, it seems to suffer from an over-emphasis on melee combat, and that makes some of the weapons and vehicles skewed towards being nonsensical in their attributes and abilities.  But, like Gear Krieg and Weird War-style games, it's played by a particular player looking for a particular flavor.

I have always thought of WH40k and Epic as the cartoonish side to my war game play. Odd and funny at times, not always realistic nor logical most of the time, but still it is OK for a cartoon.

The 40k, hence Epic, fluff has always been questionable to me ... (What a Surprise !!) :oh:  Now I can see different races having different Tech levels ... with the Eldar & Tau being the hi-tech forces in the games ...  Add to that DRMs Lizzys & Andys ... they are real Hi-tech too !  :alien:  Of course if and when O/C makes 6mm Hammer's Slammers AFVs, there will be humans with hi-tech powerful AFVs ...  8v)

Yes, we have always thought the same Javelin ... and that was one of the things we had/have the most distain for with 40K ... among many other failings ... :blues:
