As much as I really dislike the concept of not getting the minis I want, I must admit that there are great attractions to having robust pre-painted plastic miniatures when considering playing with your kids (ie hey can touch, play with and drop them without me having a coronary because of the time invested in mkaing them!). ?It also happens to suit my time availability at the moment (minimal in the extreme).
I used to love BTech as a youngster (one of my first games when it as first released), and am considering Mechwarrior CMG as a system to play with my kids (10 and 6) - has anyone tried it? ?Whats it like?
Is there enough to keep and old dog amused while teaching the pups some new tricks? ?
Anyway, despite what you may think of the game, check our this awesome CGI preview: http://www.daveschool.com/movies/mechwarrior/index.htm

Pretty good game, each match lasts 50mins! ?Current version rules are the best yet, go a good way to stressing combined arms while still keeping Mechs as the king of the game, and there are tons of viable strategies and units. ?Ten year olds should pick up the basic mechanics fairly quickly. ?However, as reigning Aussie national champ it is sad to say this, but alas the game is on its' last legs and I kinda doubt it will last out the year.
Good news is the bum's dropped out of the secondary market so you can buy heaps cheap ?Also, new releases are non-random "action packs".

I haven't tried the game in a couple years becuase I hated the rules so much. The models didn't help. I wasn't impressed with the paint quality nor the soft bendy plastic that I could never seem to get to straighten out even with hot water. On the other hand, I've seen lots of good conversions for CAV, another Mecha combat in the same scale.

Thanks very much for the input guys.
Interesting about the game burning itself out, which I would think is a habitual problem for any CMG or CCG? ?Naturally, such games would seem to need to keep adding to their depth or die. ?
Is that why MW is on its last legs? How many iterations can a game go through? How about Star Wars and D&D CMGs?
Zap: Know where I can get some cheap seconds in Oz? There are some in the US but with ridiculous postage rates that negates their value

I'm thinking what they should've done was do the game in 6mm so that they could be used with CBT if people wanted cheap BTech minis. ?But that's gamer-think not marketing-think. ?With D&D there's a lot of those being used for RPG play, and a lot times I see pictures of the SW minis being used in scenarios (usually Stargrunt, and usually the Battle of Hoth). ?The point being that there's a secondary demand for those lines.

They made it N scale presumably so terrain would be easy.
Figure quality generally trended up over time....some of the current stuff is awesome. You find a lot of CBT players ditching the 6mm/10mm metals and using the MechWarrior figures instead. Watched a truly spectacular game at Gencon.
Game is dying mostly through poor management and some woeful playtesting in the past. On a couple of occassions they released Gamebreaking units or mechanics and waited too long to correct the stuff ups, which drove a lot of people away. There was about a 14 month period where the main competitive builds were all mech-less and that drove many away, and then they had an 8 moth gap between sets which just about sealed things. They've now finally got everything tweaked and tuned but alas the horse has bolted.
Tas, I have a lot of spares.....I usually turn up at a venue with 10 armies ready . Drop me a PM and we can work out something.
