Just read the news that Peter Jackson will not direct the Hobbit.

The alledged reason is the fact P.Jackson is sueing the movie company (money what else).

Pity.

Bummer. I was hoping he would be the director.

To be honest, I hope that this doesnt get made. I really didnt like the book, as it seemed to contain all of the worst aspects of the LotR trilogy. I know that I dont have to see it, but I do think that it would be a disappointment, could never live up to the LotR films and would just bring them down.

Which order did you read them in CS?  Hobbit first or LOTR's?

I've noticed a distinct dislike of the Hobbit from people who read it after LOTR's..

Is a shame that he won't direct it though, was looking forward to King Kong style Hobbit story with a huge dragon...

I read them in the 'correct' order. I never looked at the books. Then, when I heard that the films were being made, I decided to read all four, in order, before watching them.

To be honest, The Hobbit almost put me off reading the rest of the series completely.  :(

Fair enough at least you gave them a fair chance by reading them in order.   :D

I read the Hobbit at a much younger age than the LOTR's trilogy.  About 10-11.  LOTR was about 14-15.

The Hobbit is a very different type of story with regards to stylisation and feel.

I wonder if it's an age thing when you get introduced to them?

Keep in mind that The Hobbit was written for a younger audience than LotR. I first read it (and LotR) when I was 18 and enjoyed it.

On the original topic: I'm kinda glad.  There's a lot of things 'Pyjama' did with LotR that I really didn't like, even now.

On the Hobbit: As mentioned, it was meant to be a children's book.  LotR was to be much the same (considering the tone of the first chapter or two), but JRRT got carried away over the course of a decade or two...

Our teacher read it to the class when I was about 9-10 (we were all loaned copies to follow along).  I can safely say that's why I'm here now.  That, and discovering Star Wars a year or two later. :)

Agreed. There are quite a few things, aside from leaving out parts, that Jackson did that I don't like.

I think The Hobbit is a great book, bearing in mind that it is a kid's book. My younger kids loved it, as did I when I was young. And while LotR is a better high fantasy story, bits like the Council of Rivendell were really dull... it's not a perfect book by any standard.

I'm a bit unsure that The Hobbit is 'dark' enough for modern film audiences though...

Reaver

I'm sure it could be made sufficiently "dark" for a movie.

Yeah, Tolkien wrote the Hobbit for his children to read as a bedtime story.

I like the book.

I read hobbit when I was young and really liked it. Years later LOTR was turgid.

The biggest mistake PJ made with LOTR was the orcs. Everyone knows orcs are green :p
