Just a headsup for those that read the iFelix Blog that there won't be any updates for a while as the software I use is on my PowerBook and the hard disk has just failed (without warning).

Sorry to hear that. Hope that things are back up and running shortly (and you dont lose anything in the process).
Keep us informed.

The good news is that using Firewire Target Disk Mode (using the PowerBook as a firewire drive) means that I have managed to retrieve the Blog data files (as well as the more important other files on the PowerBook) and I am now trying to get the application to work on my other Mac.

Hi Jimbo,
To be honest, I never could get you blog to come up well and I have no idea why.
I originally thought it was because I'm still stuck with dinosaur dial-up, but I tried to access your blog from a friend's PC with DSL and had the same problem.
I wish you luck figuring things out.
Shabbat Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

The problem is not the hosting, the blog there is working fine.
The problem I have is with the raw data behind the blog and that is a different story. Potentially one solution is to re-input the data which would be nigh on impossible with over 650 entries...
I have managed to retrieve a blog backup to the 17th December, so I would need to manually add about 20 entries... However I do have five blogs...

Good news, I have managed to retrieve the all important blog data. I should be able to re-build the blog and publish new stuff before the end of the day.
More importantly I have managed to salvage a lot of files from the PowerBook including some digital photographs which I would have otherwise lost.
Moral of the story, always make a back up.

I have now managed to salvage the most recent blog data and integrate it into the backup I had from the 17th December. The preview is working and I am now uploading the blog. You won't see any difference as I have not added any new entries.
Once I have successfully published (which is taking it's time as it is publishing the full 50 odd MB again) I will be able to add new entries.

Excellent work, and well done for being organised enough to recover from this. I know how on edge this kind of thing can make you feel!

Well I was a bit presumptuous and it wasn't actually okay.
However after tweaking and a bit more testing I now have the Blog software working on the other Mac and I have been publishing this morning without issue. Looks like it is all now working.
Isn't it nice that Apple have now released a new laptop...

Quote (CyberShadow @ 09 Jan. 2006 (22:52)) | Excellent work, and well done for being organised enough to recover from this. I know how on edge this kind of thing can make you feel! | Having once lost a lot of data, I dropped my Toshiba Laptop on the floor and killed the hard drive, I now always work under the assumption that unless you have two copies of a computer file it doesn't actually exist...
In the end I was lucky and could retrieve all the data from the dead PowerBook.
However in recreating the blog on the new Mac I was able to replace virtually all the postings (five blogs over three years) and only lost about 12 postings overall (and as I had the information I could recreate and replace those very easily.
Moral of the story, have a backup, always.
