AoS is the best thing to happen in years!

It kickstarted Kings of War groups all over the world and showed people what a proper game of fantasy battles is like.

Seriously, there are many points of similarity between KoW and EA - simple rules, units built with a short statline and generic special rules, a focus on movement and objective-based scenarios over leveraging your units special capabilities, all the way to community led but company assisted development, like Epic was in the glory days of Specialist Games.

This. I won't claim AoS is perfect (and I do like KoW a lot better as a game system), but I haven't had a boring game of AoS yet.

Lets not devolve into a "how to have fun" discussion (Warseer has that one covered quite well IMHO).

Several points:

epic: You keep predicting the demise of GW in almost every contribution you make to this thread. To have an opinion is okay, but to keep repeating it as though it's based on some sort of factual evidence is unconvincing, unless you can actually provide the evidence. Do you have evidence to support your position? If so, please provide links, as I'd be interested to see where the evidence is that GW is doomed.

You also keep saying in some responses, most people think x. Again, this cannot be confirmed without evidence.

Moving to the topic more widely:

Regarding Lost Patrol, which was referred to early on in this thread, it's the fourth incarnation of a concept which dates back to Advanced Space Crusade from the the late 1980s. That game was converted into Tyranid Attack, Lost Patrol (2000) and now Lost Patrol (2016). The idea behind releasing boxed games to bring in a wider audience is good, but I do not think that they've made the right choice by revamping this game for a fourth time.

Conversely, I think that the decision to bring back Warhammer Quest (Silver Tower) is a very good one, since it has not previously been remade, and I would hope that it would sell well. My only concern is the price. At £95 that's way too steep for me. I don't know whether that's overpriced or on par with today's boardgames though.

I agree with some things that GW does and not others. I have had numerous hours of enjoyment out of the games it has produced in the past though, so while its current direction for 40K in particular is not my thing, it does not mean I'm about to jump up and down and predict its demise. I would like to think that it will find ways to resolve any issues which it currently has.

Hi!

I don't know if it can be called dead in the literal sense, but its been dead to me for almost 20 years.

I guess it depends on your definition. ;)

I dont think GW will die. The universes they have created are worth something, just not always managed properly.

I dont hate GW like many do. I am repeatedly baffled by some of the decisions they have made, but they also gave me a way to spend my time for 20 years starting with a game system I still love today (AT/SM1).

I have lost interest in keeping up with 40k, and building all of the models. I mostly have everything I want for most of their games, and only pick up bitz here and there. In many aspects they have lost me as a customer, but I don't hate them. I find a lot of what they do really interesting, where other companies fail to do that. I could be the biggest reason why too. I just don't play games like I used to, but I am still fascinated with the very thing that got me into table-top games to begin with: Space Marines.

But many companies hit their peak and then decline, but hang around forever. Look at IBM. Then Microsoft. Think Amazon, Facebook, and Google will still be where they are today 10-20 years from now? Of course not. But they will still be around.

GW isn't going anywhere. They just wont be as big as they are now. Much to a lot of gamer's loss.

I do imagine GW is going to have to have a hard look at itself and realize that being more political correct might lead to expansion. Now, I hate politically correct, but if you look at Disney and what they have done with Star Wars for example. Introducing 'stong' women in lead roles as well as minorities, while everything in GW is still in 1980s white washing.

Now I dont have a problem with that. I am a white male. All the minis I paint are white. But the planet is shared by more than one race and it seems GW is leaving out just about everyone else. Not saying there haven't been some racial groups represented from time to time, but GW sure seems to make us think that in the 41st millenium, only white people survived. How do they expect to expand?

Imagine if they released a live-action 40k movie. How Hollywood-ized it would have to become. So while I think the universe they have created is cool, its go a long way to go before its adopted by the mainstream. And not everyone builds models. If they really want to take things to the next step, GW will have to realize its 2016. They have peaked in gaming, but there is a lot more to do than games if they want to kick it up to the next level.

Transgendered Space Marines? Yeah I roll my eyes too, but again. Its 2016. These are the times are are living in. Everyone has to feel they are included these days.

Hi,

Interesting to follow this thread. First of all I must say that I agree that it seems unlikely that GW will fail anytime soon. Having said that... I think it is interesting to look at the competition (some have already given some good examples). I never played 40k. But I have been a fan (although not a player for a long time) of EA. However, recently I was introduced to Bolt Action (and other Warlord games, such as Black Powder). BA is a fun game with a huge number of excellent minis available, not just from WG. As far as I can tell, this must be a serious competitor for 40K. Who doesnt like WW2 (its like a plague on TV)? And as I said, its a good game, a lot like EA, in fact. Suddenly I dont miss EA so much anymore!

Now, on to the point. I cant say I think WG are cheap exactly; they are on the same level as other makers of ww2 28mm figs. What did shock me though was when I compared them to GW; a set of 10 28mm metal figs costs 15£ at Warlord, 50£ at GW, more than triple the price. The conclusion must be that it is very likely that while GW may not die off entirely, it may well diminish in size dramatically compared to the competition. And thats probably good for all involved, I suspect...

I agree that while they may be able to start "doing the right things" in some cases - engaging with their customers at least superficially, as long as the prices remain at ridiculous levels they're shooting themselves in the foot as far as I'm concerned.

I started playing GW games and collecting the models when I was 8 and apart from a box for my birthday and Christmas everything I bought was on my shoestring pocket money budget. There is no way I would be able to afford to start gaming now with 'pocket money' (unless kids nowadays get like £50 a month....). Where GW believes they'll find 'new blood' that aren't all well paid professionals with oodles of disposable income I have no idea

I know people have approached GW trying to buy or "rent" the liscense for E:a. GW has always turned it down. Why? I'm not so familiar with business practises and find it very hard to see any negative effects of letting a third party carry on developing the game and paying GW liscense money.

Indeed, during the Otterman incident 4 years ago, my lawyer and I offered to purchase a license. The fact that I'm Todderman now indicates the success.

Or is it that you always just get the last word in? ;)

On topic: I'm looking forward to reading the financials in the coming days when released. They made a statement that licensing was unexpectedly high which pushed them over expectations. So by process of.deduction that's likely going to see more if the same: Flat revenue on core and I'll go out on a limb and guess we'll see further drops in trade channel and increase on stores asFLGS Continue to walk away from GW. EU dales walked off a cliff at the half this last year so I'm very curious to see the trajectory there as well. Interesting to note that core is basically flat according to them in their statement and that's come with a string of pretty well received box games and the last chance sales on WHFB as well.
