I think everyone saw this coming. Just have to wait and see if this is just a blip or that start of a bigger downward trend. Given how the wargames and miniature market has changed over the last 5-10 years, I think they really need to have a rethink about their strategy. Gamers have so much more choice these days and it is a lot more easier for them to go elsewhere, GW can't rely on just being the only manufacturer in the market these days. |

I far prefer democratic community led development with the flowering of multiple manufacturers over the old dictatorial monopoly. Only thing better than death of SG would be death of GW. The drop in sales is bigger than it looks, because within the overall drop, IP-licence revenue actually went up. |

It's interesting stuff. I was a stalwart GW supporter until around a year ago or so. I won't say 40k got too expensive, however, my subjective perception of the value of the product has decreased relative to its price. As for Fantasy, I stopped playing with the introduction of 8th edition, which I feel was a disaster of a rules set. 40k 6th edition is also a garbled mess of a game. I'm not mad at GW. Just indifferent. As noxious as their business practices may be, I do think it would be a blow to wargaming as a whole if they were to go under, so I don't hope for that. If nothing else, they do attract some new blood to the hobby, some of whom may branch out from 40k. Interestingly, all of my hobby money is now going to their discontinued games, and they're not seeing a penny of it. Far be it from me to tell them how to run their business. I am sure continued support of their Specialist Games range didn't make sense on the balance sheet. However, the amount of money I have spent on Epic in the past year is not insignificant. Who knows. I just feel indifferent. It honestly seems that Epic is better off in the hands of the fans, although, the relative difficulty in finding models is an obstacle that is tough to overcome when trying to recruit new players. |
