While working at a bank several years ago there was a heated discussion regarding the advertising material having 'its' and 'it's'.

It was amazing to see how many people gave the knee-jerk reaction of advising all and sundry that only 'it's' was the acceptable use of the word and 'its' did not exist. Within the hour, after a simple lesson in English 101, many of them had pulled their posts from that intranet discussion. :)

Yesterday I saw a road sign directing taxis down an alternate route, it said: taxi's

That road sign's perfectly sound. The route belongs to one particular taxi. The rest are trespassing. Taxi drivers are like that.

In the context of a casual internet forum, i really do not care :)
If it was in print/publication/'something proper' yes, but on here, no ;)

My pet peeve is hyphens/en dashes* – i will always correct them in stuff for publication, but would not do so in an internet conversation.

edit: Also because i am a spiteful person, whenever i see someone online correct another poster's grammer i add them to a mental watch list. I then read all of their posts with extra care and smile to myself whenever i see them make a mistake.

*makes a mental note and goes back over some of his recent posts to check his grammar*

I have no problem with the 'it is'/it's/'it has' contraction. I am really bad at the difference when to use the apostrophe after the 's', for example Johns'. I grammar bad... but normally I am OK as I have some fairly high level and technical writing in my job, and they pick up on that kind of thing really fast. You should see some essays I get, though. They would make you weep.

I know and understand the rule, but I genuinely don't care if people do it wrong. What does it matter, you know what they mean?

The same reason why people who write "I should of" ought to be crucified as an example to others.* Because if your words mean something different than you do, that's a problem. It shouldn't be up to other people to figure out what you're trying to say.

*It's "should've". It's a contraction of "should have".
