My wife would LOVE to live there (and I wouldn't mind it either). Of course, a house is not a home until the games room is set up! ![]() Enjoy your new home vanlak! |

The weathering and lighting effects are really effective, but maybe it could do with more scale indicators and a final drybrush? ![]() Very cool ![]() |

Thanks guys. it IS a bit olde style - we've had tourists photographing the balcony! Bit embarrassing, that. The games room - that will be located in the dungeonny bit, close to the wine rack cut in the rock. Final drybrush? More like a final brush to get rid of the dust - we had to remove a few tonnes of stone and rubbish (no, no gold) from the poor old cellar. |

Wow. That's a very cool place. Looks like it could be a pain to heat. And some of it looks like it could be a bit gloomy, too. But it more than makes up for both of those through sheer awesomeness. I am most envious of your house. |

Can Yen and I live with you? We're attractive. Well, I am in dim lighting anyway. |

Thanks Axel - it could be, but at least here in Malta we don't get aggressive winters, and the fireplaces should help too ![]() Carrington - it does go underground, but the only exponents of geothermal activity remotely close by are Stromboli and Etna, and I'm happy to be out of their way (not exactly out of range - Etna can send it's ashes and reportedly even rocks here, not to mention deeper than standard waves). Otterman - sure, we'll leave you in the cellar in that case, where it's dark - aw heck, if you bring along some of those grand tanks and AFVs you makem you can even sun yourself on the roof! ![]() Dwarf - I guess the cellar is the only logical place for you, right? No gold though... but no goblins either. |

Actually, that's an interesting misconception about residential geothermal. It's a whole different animal than utility-scale power generation (on the model of, say, Iceland). It seems I got the depth wrong... from http://www.geocomfort.com/geothermal-technology They are talking about vertical water wells of 150-200 feet... no tectonics involved. Quote: Your own backyard has the potential to be an energy source for heating and cooling comfort. Outdoor air temperatures fluctuate throughout the year with the changing seasons. In contrast, ground temperatures about four to six feet below the Earth's surface remain relatively moderate and constant all year. That's because the Earth absorbs 47% of all the heat energy that reaches its surface from the sun. A geothermal system circulates a water-based solution through a buried loop system to take advantage of these constant temperatures. A single piece of equipment has the ability to heat and cool your home, while providing some or all of your home's hot water as well. Geothermal systems can save you 30% to 70% on your monthly utility bills. Of course this is from the perspective of continental weather systems, where constant underground temperatures of 50F or what, 16-17C seems fairly balmy averaged over the year. |

Ah, now that's interesting. Wonder if it works well on solid limestone... that's what we've got for several hundred metres below us. Regrettably, land area is something which Malta lacks..... thanks for the info though, this proved educational ![]() |

It has finally happened, I see. Now I'll just have to get a homing beacon to your cellar and jump into a Termite. Or how about a Hellbore... >:D |
