Another site gets both barrels, apparently from a combination of trademark in URL and making money from advertising.

List of charges...
COMPLAINT FOR
TRADEMARK INFRINGEMENT;
CYBERSQUATTING;
DILUTION;
UNFAIR AND DECEPTIVE TRADE PRACTICES;
AND UNFAIR COMPETITION

Unfortunately, they have a good case... though how taking down their unaffiliated support sites will help them grow their business is less clear.

My feeling is that this is just ham-fisted IP house-keeping, with the unfortunate side effect of upsetting a bunch fans. I understand that if you don't defend your IP then over time it becomes harder to enforce.

Is anyone aware of an action that wasn't based on the trademark in the URL + advertising revenue combo?

As far as I know not.

I can see the issue with money making through there IP.
